FamlySecure App (Android)
Problem: People generally worry about their loved ones when they are away from each other since they are unable to check on them.
Aim: FamlySecure provides users with the opportunity to check on the safety of their loved ones through location tracking and customisable triggers and alerts.
Target Group: Families, especially those with children and elderly. However, not limited only to families.

Introduction:
Since majority of people use their smartphones all the time, we can identify any risks a user may face based on the behaviour on their smartphone. Based on a user’s custom settings, we can detect any problems a person may face and trigger an appropriate alert. Thus, enhancing the safety of users through FamlySecure.

This application has 2 key features.

Feature 1: Request for location
A user can check on the location of another family member on a map. However, for the person’s privacy, the frequency at which the location of the person is disseminated will be pre-determined and set-up between the users. This feature can be disabled. In turn, the user can opt to send their location the instance there is a request by another family member. Should the family member wish to not send their location, the family member is required to key in a passcode/keyword that would assure the family member that he is doing fine.

Feature 2: Sequence of alerts
Based on certain triggers, a sequence of alerts is broadcasted in the case of an emergency.

Triggers:

  1. If a family member has not moved from a location for a certain period (i.e. phone has not moved at all hence indicating an unresponsive family member)
  2. If a family member ventures too far from a certain boundary (i.e. outside the country)
  3. If the phone has been handling very unusual activity (e.g. repeated failed attempts to unlock the phone)

Alerts:

  1. Sending a push notification to other family members.
  2. Calling other family members.
  3. Enabling the real-time tracking of the smartphone.
  4. Taking pictures through the front and back cameras of the smartphone to see the context of the emergency though this is quite limited
  5. Calling the police on that location

For each trigger, the alerts to be executed can be customised for a user (i.e. the user can customise which alert is the most appropriate for which situation)

Dear Raj,

Our group was looking to create an outlook application targeted at email marketeers that would be able to help users sort through automatic replies and parse useful information from them. Oftentimes, marketing campaigns result in thousands of bounced emails/automatic replies with useful information, such as the contact information of other people in the same organisation or a notice that someone is leaving his/her company and is being replaced.

Though this information would be valuable to most marketing teams, parsing through thousands of emails manually is extremely slow and tedious work, so we hoped to build an application to fill this gap. At present, we were looking to make use of natural language processing libraries available for python to accomplish this, whilst using react to build the actual application.

Both of us are fairly new to software development in general and were hoping to draw on your experience with APIs in terms of the actual execution of our project. Good Evening Mr Raj,

My name is Shawn Chew and along with my teammate Adam Tan, we form the group RoomMaster. We would like to seek your guidance and mentorship on our Orbital project, which will primarily be a hotel management app relying on a database in the backend. We envision it to have two levels of abstraction: one as a manager, and the other as a customer. Customers will only have access to their room, in which they can extend their stay via payment gateways etc. Managers on the other hand will have a more macroscopic view of the entire hotel. We would also like to incorporate a certain level of security elements into our project. We hope to seek your expertise in database design as well as get your advise on certain design choices that we will encounter along this journey.

Dear Raj,

Our group is called Team Macchiato. Our idea is called Giftwrap, it is a wishlist app that aims to eliminate the uncertainty that comes with buying gifts during special occasions. We wanted to implement this by having an app extension that allows users to add items to their wishlist from any app with a share sheet. Their friends are also able to see the wishlist and know what they want for a gift on the accompanying native app. We wanted to tie this app and app extension combo to Facebook to leverage on its large user base. This is the core functionality for the app and subsequently if we can do more we were thinking of implementing features like a calendar view and gift idea recorder. We have actually consulted you on this idea and have further developed the idea to its current state as mentioned.

We are both new to software development and would like to draw on your expertise with APIs to further improve our app's idea as well as execution as we embark on this journey. Thank you!
