Anything you'd like the mentor to know:

Dear Srivatsa,
Our group was looking to create an outlook application targeted at email marketeers that would be able to help users sort through automatic replies and parse useful information from them. Oftentimes, marketing campaigns result in thousands of bounced emails/automatic replies with useful information, such as the contact information of other people in the same organisation or a notice that someone is leaving his/her company and is being replaced.
Though this information would be valuable to most marketing teams, parsing through thousands of emails manually is extremely slow and tedious work, so we hoped to build an application to fill this gap. At present, we were looking to make use of natural language processing libraries available for python to accomplish this, whilst using react to build the actual application.
Both of us are fairly new to software development in general and were hoping to draw on your experience with APIs in terms of the actual execution of our project. Do let us know if you would be interested to hear more about the project/would consider mentoring us and we hope to hear from you soon. Thank you!

Hey Joshua & Shawn,

Thanks for reaching out. It is a great project to get started on to get into machine learning and software development. A couple of questions:

  1. What are your majors?
  2. Do you have any experience with machine learning tools (PyTorch, Tensorflow, scikit learn, etc)?
  3. Have you worked on any machine learning project before? (If yes, what tools did you use)
  4. Have you worked with react before? (If yes, what did you build. If you did not, it is fine as well)
  5. What do you hope to achieve by pursuing this project? (To learn more about software dev/ML, Launch a startup, Build a service that is used by other people, etc)

cheers

Anything you'd like the mentor to know:
Dear Srivatsa,
Our team aims to create an app called FallSafe that will detect falls and send any relevant medical details, their current status and location, etc. to their next-of-kin and a professional medical team. Our target audience are the elderly and disabled. Through the use of FallSafe, help can be sent on their way with increased efficiency and accuracy. We wish to allow synchorisation between our app and a wearable device (ie wristband) for convenience and increased ease of use towards elderly/disabled. Thus, we are seeking advice and guidance on both IoT and backend
aspects of our project.

We both have little to no experience in software development and would like to draw on your expertise in terms of full stack development, with greater focus on backend design, to aid our app’s development. Thank You!

Best Regards,
Kenneth and Debbie

Hey Kenneth & Debbie,

Thanks for reaching out. It is a meaningful project to work on. A couple of questions from me:

  1. What are your majors?
  2. Do you plan to build the wearable from scratch or use something off the shelf like the MYO band? (It is okay if you have not decided yet)
  3. What do you hope to achieve by pursuing this project? (To learn more about software dev/IoT, Launch a startup, Build a service that is used by the elderly, etc)

cheers

Good Day Srivatsa,

  1. Both of us major in Information Security
  2. We would definitely prefer a wearable that is off the shelf however we have not decided on a specific brand. We’d like to weigh the pros and cons of the wearables available on the market before deciding on it.
  3. We would like to learn more about software development and IOT in an industry-like environment. We believe there is great potential to nurture our current idea into a startup in the near future, we would like to start small but with scalability in mind.

Best Regards,
Kenneth and Debbie
