App Name: Edible (Android)

Problem:
As someone with dietary restrictions (vegetarian/ allergies), it is tough to discern immediately whether one can eat a certain food product based on the packaging/ ingredient list alone due to coded food additives (E260 etc). Moreover, health-conscious users might want to find out more details about additives at-a-glance rather than individually figuring out what each coded additive stands for and its relevant details.

Solution/What the app does:
We plan to create an app where a user is able to find out whether a food product meets their dietary restrictions just by taking a photo of the ingredient list. Should it not meet their restrictions, the list of problematic ingredients will be printed out.

Core Features:
Maintain a database of common food ingredients in packaged food as well as coded additives that users can search for in the app
Immediately discern whether the food item meets your dietary restrictions by taking a photo of the ingredients list

Potential Extensions:
Auto-translation of ingredients of food products with packaging in a foreign language so that we can carry out Core Feature 2 for imported products
iOS release
Nutritional checker and tracking
Problem: Doesn’t track everything eg. fresh food so may not have much use
Storing user data (Search history/trends)
If a product does not meet dietary restrictions, suggest similar products

Implementation:
Build a database of commonly coded food additives
Manually input from common databases, manual authentication and checking
Build the photo parsing system (main app)
Build a system to automatically add unknown ingredients not in database
Doable? How to do - Automatically google unknown ingredient and search links and parse info and add? How to ensure reliable/authentic?
Add extensions
Technical details: Flutter for frontend, firebase for backend

What we need help with:
A professional’s opinion on our ideation: Is our solution optimal for solving the issue at hand, is there any other feature we should consider, something we are overlooking?
Roadmapping: Is the path we laid out feasible? Is our timeline appropriate? Should we be prioritising something else?
Dividing the work: Is it advisable to have one person handle the front-end and one person handle the back-end? We want to maximise our learning while also ensuring we have a good development plan in place.
Technical guidance where possible (Although we realise most of this will be self-learning): Database, storage and parsing.

Anything you'd like the mentor to know:

Dear Terence,
Our group was looking to create an outlook application targeted at email marketeers that would be able to help users sort through automatic replies and parse useful information from them. Oftentimes, marketing campaigns result in thousands of bounced emails/automatic replies with useful information, such as the contact information of other people in the same organisation or a notice that someone is leaving his/her company and is being replaced.
Though this information would be valuable to most marketing teams, parsing through thousands of emails manually is extremely slow and tedious work, so we hoped to build an application to fill this gap. At present, we were looking to make use of natural language processing libraries available for python to accomplish this, whilst using react to build the actual application.
Both of us are fairly new to software development in general and were hoping to draw on your experience with APIs in terms of the actual execution of our project. Do let us know if you would be interested to hear more about the project/would consider mentoring us and we hope to hear from you soon. Thank you!

Anything you'd like the mentor to know:
Dear Terence,

Our group is called Team Macchiato. Our idea is called Giftwrap, it is a wishlist app that aims to eliminate the uncertainty that comes with buying gifts during special occasions. We wanted to implement this by having an app extension that allows users to add items to their wishlist from any app with a share sheet. Their friends are also able to see the wishlist and know what they want for a gift on the accompanying native app. We wanted to tie this app and app extension combo to Facebook to leverage on its large user base. This is the core functionality for the app and subsequently if we can do more we were thinking of implementing features like a calendar view and gift idea recorder. We plan on implementing such an idea using React Native to create a native app as well as the app extension.

We are both new to software development and would like to draw on your expertise to further improve our app's idea as well as execution. I personally have worked with you during the Chirpey days and would like to continue working with you as we embark on this journey. Thank you!

Looking forward to your reply,
Arthur and Si Ning

Anything you'd like the mentor to know:
Dear Terenece,
Our team aims to create an app called FallSafe that will detect falls and send any relevant medical details, their current status and location, etc. to their next-of-kin and a professional medical team. Our target audience are the elderly and disabled. Through the use of FallSafe, help can be sent on their way with increased efficiency and accuracy. We wish to allow synchorisation between our app and a wearable device (ie wristband) for convenience and increased ease of use towards elderly/disabled. Thus, we are seeking advice and guidance on both IoT and backend
aspects of our project.

We both have little to no experience in software development and would like to draw on your expertise in terms of full stack development, with greater focus on backend design, to aid our app’s development. Thank You!

Best Regards,
Kenneth and Debbie

5) Hello! My partner and I changed our idea as we wanted to include an AR feature. So we had to retake our Liftoff video. As of right now, we're thinking of either using React, Unity or Vulforia. We're still in the early stages of researching what would be the best way of using implementing our AR features and our search functions. Hope we can receive your guidance on our project. Thank you!

Terence Chok Ke Wen

Hi everyone,

Thanks for choosing me as your mentor for your projects. I see that everyone has thought about their orbital projects in great detail.

However, I only have the capacity to provide full mentorship for two teams. I choose Team Macchiato and Team FallSafe. You may contact me via Slack or Telegram @terchok. We will meet in real life to iron out the details of your projects.

For the rest of the teams that are not chosen, you can still contact me via the channels stated above. I will try my best to assist you and answer your queries.
