A short description of our project,
We aim to cut down time spent waiting in queues at NUS by creating a pre-order system where you can pre-order food and specify when you will collect it. We also wish to implement a payment system whereby students can pay for their meal remotely, cutting out the hassle of any payment during collection. This way you can truly grab and go with your food.

Olivia Juliani Johansen

Hi Jian Jie!
We are Clara and Olivia from team localink. Our project centres around creating a site that allows local physical business to digitize their shop. In this age, online shopping is overtaking shopping at physical stores. We hope that by providing greater ease of searching for items in the local area and convenient navigation, our app can help physical businesses make a comeback, as we bring the fun and ease of local shopping back.

Phillmont Muktar

Hi, Jian Jie!

We are Phillmont and Marcus from team Bloodwork, and we are building BloodConnect, a platform to connect doctors and blood donors in cases of emergencies or low supply at blood banks. Doctors can make requests, and the nearest compatible donors will be notified. Donors can also browse through requests and start donating.

We plan to build the platform with React Native for the front-end mobile application and Node.js, Firebase, and MySQL for the back-end RESTful API and database management.

Thank you for your kind attention, and we look forward to working with your guidance! (☞゚ヮ゚)☞

Donavan Lim

Hi Jian Jie,
We aim to design trippyy, a user-friendly platform that optimises and generates trip itineraries that best suits each traveller from their inputs and selections, based on our auto-curation algorithm which would consider practical factors such as minimising total time spent travelling between sites-of-interest, or their total travel expenditure.

Jian Jie, your experience encompassing startup-based growth and technical expertise in JavaScript, coupled with your passion for projects that deliver real impact to people, strongly aligns with our aim to design a usable and meaningful web platform that users can genuinely interact with and benefit from. Xupeng and I aim to commercialise our platform to stakeholders involving travellers and firms in the tourism industry. We believe that your command in JavaScript will be pivotal in guiding us to optimise our platform's user experience as we model after the design elements and principles used to construct NUSMods, which would maximise the potential of our platform's capability and scalability.

NGUYEN KHANH DUY

Hi Jian Jie,

I am Nguyen Khanh Duy from team Anonymous. In short, we would like to create a web called the NUSCommunity, which integrates a few common requirements shared by all students onto a single platform so that the NUS students are well-supported.
We are working on a Javascript web app that is NUSMods-related. We understand that you have experience in Software Engineering and have a great passion for Orbital program. We appreciate this and hope that you could support us in this project with your expertise and passion.

Yang Jiyu

Hi Jian Jie! Your expertise in web apps will be advantageous to us. While it may not be a NUSMods-related project, we are looking to make it a fully functioning website by the end of orbital. I hope that you will take the time to look at our project. We are building a price comparator web app that aims to help both businesses and consumers monitor products over multiple categories in order to make better decisions. Lee Yue Yang

Hi Jian Jie! Our team, planar, intends to create a note-taking and group-assignment collaboration platform as our Orbital project. We understand your area of specialty is in web development, and we feel that as a primarily web app, planar would really benefit from your guidance. Furthermore, while not being the core feature set of planar, we do intend to integrate some level of functionality from NUSMods such that users are better able to plan their time. We understand that you are more comfortable with React and Node, so if you prefer, we are also open to switching our tech stack over to that.

Christopher Goh Zhen Fung

Hello Jian Jie,

I am Chris, and together with my teammate Yitao, we are team Rank-a-thon. Our project is an end-to-end web application for large-scale hackathons, to support efficient, reliable and transparent judging using pairwise ranking algorithms. The app would generate a list of projects for each judge to rank. The backend will then compute the final ranking of the projects to determine the winners of the hackathon. This results in less subjectivity and more reliability, efficiency, and transparency in the judging process. This app will be deployed at Hack&Roll 2021, Singapore’s largest student-run hackathon.

Liau Jian Jie

Hi folks 👋! Thanks for sending in your materials.

Unfortunately, I have already picked 2 of the teams to work with this summer. However, I do have some thoughts that I want to share to teams that are working on marketplace problems. They might not be relevant to Orbital's deliverables, but I think its essential for software engineers of the future to be cognizant of product and growth concerns.

In particular, teams working on platforms that will suffer from marketplace problems are:

  • JustFind
  • Natalino BUSA
  • Grab n' Go
  • locallink

I am going to illustrate the ideas with JustFind as an example:

JustFind is essentially a marketplace where you have a supply side (tutors) and demand side (tutees). In general, marketplace suffers the chicken-and-egg problem—where you start with no demand and no supply on your platform. In your context: If you have no tutors, then no tutees will come. The reverse is also true: If you have no tutees, then no tutors with come.

Without a sound strategy to acquire either, your platform will end up having no motivation for either tutors or tutees to use your platform. So I would like to invite you to consider:

  1. What is the single biggest problem that you think tutors and tutees are facing?
  2. How can you validate that this is indeed a problem? (Hint: talk to tutors and tutees; gather insights!)
  3. Are there bigger problems than what you think is a problem? Which of these problems, when solved, have the largest impact with the lowest effort?
  4. Is the platform you're building solving this set of core problem? How do you verify that it is indeed solving those problems?
  5. Why haven't companies in the space built the solution for this already?
  6. Are there extra things in the platform that doesn't solve this core problem? Can you strip them away and focus the effort to fine tune your solution to the primary objective?
  7. Once you have launched, how can you acquire users?
  8. Can you engage your potential tutors and tutees before shipping any product? (Example: get your friends and family members who are interested in being tutors or tutees to sign up for updates, or bootstrap a landing page that let's users subscribe to pre-launch updates to your platform.)

(You don't have to reply me with answers, they are just questions to get you thinking.)

While I know that launching a useful product might not be one of Orbital's goals, you should not underestimate your capacity to deliver value even if you are just a year 1 or 2 student.

Hope you folks have a wonderful summer of building awesome products! 🥳
