Sng Wei Zhen Shanice

Hi Venkat!

We are Shanice and Min Xian from Team NUSPlanner.

Our team details are as follows:
Team name: NUSPlanner
Student name: Sng Wei Zhen Shanice & Ong Min Xian
Contact Details (Email): e0774411@u.nus.edu & e0540516@u.nus.edu
Contact Details (Telegram): @sngshanice & @johnongminxian

Our team is proposing a web application that helps students to land their dream job by providing insights on how they allocate their time in three important aspects - work, academics and extracurriculars.

As employers increasingly value technical skills over traditional qualifications, countless undergraduates are struggling to differentiate themselves from the growing pool of skilled competitors in Singapore. With our web application, we are confident that we can make a difference to this issue by reinforcing the need for undergraduates to develop their portfolio holistically from the very beginning, which will be vital to helping them land their dream job.

The biggest selling point of our project would definitely be the use of descriptive tools like bar charts which enable users to derive meaningful insights on their daily activities through a single glance. We will also be providing a dashboard view which allows students to track their productivity, and a progress report which helps students accurately put together a detailed resume based on the activities that they have logged into the planner.

We are aware that you have extensive knowledge in web development, with a 16 year background in many different types of web pages. Your skills will be an amazing complement to our project, thus we would like to request for you to be our mentor.

We will be most delighted to have you as our mentor because of your passion for web development and commitment towards the highest standards in all projects that you undertake. Similarly, we are a driven team that pays attention to details and strives to deliver the best in all that we do. We are certain that we will be able to learn much from you to create a quality product, and also hope to forge lasting connections with you during and after this mentorship.

More details about our project can be viewed at the following links. On top of the required submissions, we have also prepared a short 1 minute video to demonstrate our prototype.

We hope that our project resonates with you and that you will choose to work with our team.

Thank you for your time and we look forward to hearing from you!

Silas Tay

Hello Mr. Venkat! We are Silas and Bryan from Team Head in the Clouds! We are contactable via email e0726509@u.nus.edu (Bryan) and e0725425@u.nus.edu (Silas). Here is a link to our poster, proposal and video: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Ldla7bUpmy4L3Pp85xVyI6swKcQN8zNH?usp=sharing The main motivation behind creating this application is the overly complex task manager in the market today. As such we wanted to create something that is simple yet effective. Inspired by the concept of bullet journalling, our project Striker was born – a task manager application that focuses on getting the job done, without the superfluous design. We are using React from the frontend and Go for the backend. We feel that your wealth of experience is very relevant to our project and will be immensely useful in guiding us in the right direction as we embark on this project. We are eager to learn from you and do drop us an email if you have any questions. Thank you for taking the time to consider us and we are excited to hear from you soon!

Kok Chun Zhi

Good day Mr Venkat!

We are Chun Zhi and Shenghan from Project Minerva, which was created in response to the surprising lack of satisfactory digital platforms for tutors and tutees to connect conveniently.

With roughly S$1.4 billion spent on tuition in 2021 alone, it is shocking to see tuition-matching solutions that have lots of room for improvement.
Current solutions include agency webpages, which require manual matching by agents, as well as Telegram Bots which spin out walls of text that are hard to read. We believe that this can be done better.

Our vision is to ultimately create a web app that facilitates easy and direct communication between tutors and tutees. We shall leave the details to our proposal found below, which elaborates on the ways we believe tuition-matching can be done better in Singapore.

We believe that your vast experience in web development will be a great help in bringing our vision to fruition! We aspire to create a web app that is simple and aesthetically pleasing, yet sophisticated and capable enough to provide the tools required for good matches between tutors and tutees. With an experienced mentor on board to guide us down the right path, we believe that we can achieve this goal to the best of our abilities.

We hope that we can form a meaningful connection with you, both within and without this Orbital Mentorship programme. We are extremely excited to explore and learn more about web development while solving a need in the community through this project! Thank you for taking the time to read through this post, and we hope that we can have the honour of having you join us on this journey.

Warmest Regards,
Project Minerva

Wesley Bennett Loo Dela Cruz

Hello Venkat,

Like many others in NUS Computer Science, Darren and I have spent most of our uni life grinding and studying. However, it has made us wonder if we are genuinely making the most out of our study time as we can often find ourselves distracted by our smart devices or getting thrown weekly assignments (that never seem to end).

We experimented with different study and project management techniques during the semester to solve our itch, such as keeping up with a Kanban-style to-do list and time-tracking how long each homework assignment takes. In addition, we wanted to track better how we performed daily to analyze whether or not we were studying effectively.

Despite seeing improvement in our study habits, we also realized that our workflow for recording our daily tasks was quite repetitive, and we used multiple applications in this process. This realization led wanting to create a web application that solves our problem and hope that it may potentially help other Gen Z students.

We believe that your veteran experience in web development across several environments and countries would make you a great mentor for our team.

The 100 Club - A Validated Concept with 20+ Interested Student Founders Hi Mr Venkat, thank you for volunteering to be part of Orbital. We believe your skillsets + prior experiences as a Software Engineer, would make a great fit for our team, and we would love the opportunity to work together + learn from you. We’ve got a proven, validated concept, and a motivated team that will ensure strong initiative + planning frameworks to reduce any operational concerns on your end. Entrepreneurship is difficult - it’s lonely, it’s tough to hold yourself accountable, and it’s not easy to explore uncharted territories. That is why our team is currently building The 100 Club, which is a mastermind community, that matches entrepreneurial individuals into groups of 4, in order for them to support each other in staying accountable, sharing advice, and networking to grow their business. We plan on supporting this community by building an exclusive membership platform (web application). It is an idea that we are going to expand/commercialise in the future and we have already found traction with over 20+ student founders keen on joining us. Feel free to check out our material below! We hope you consider our proposal favourably and look forward to hearing from you. Cheers. Loh Yi Kuang

Hi Mr Venkat!

Nice to meet you. We are Jing En and Yi Kuang, and we would love to have the honour of you mentoring us for our project.

Pilot is an extension of conventional academic search engines on the open web. Combining features such as instant click downloads, field-related analytics and the ability to curate personal archives, we aim to liberate and revolutionise the way we browse academic papers. Project Pilot combines the functionalities of JSTOR's constellate API, Google Scholar and Library Genesis, to allow users to browse, save and download research papers for free on demand, on top of other additional features.

With your extensive knowledge and experience in web development, I believe our project will be an interesting undertaking and we hope to work with you!

Features

  1. Our intended recommendation algorithm will allow users to spend less time searching while gaining access to the most relevant & curated academic papers.
  2. Every student knows how annoying it is to lose a paper that you saw somewhere, somehow, a long time ago. Pilot’s personal database will allow users to store papers with the click of a button, storing it into their own database for later reference. No more frustration of losing your papers!
  3. Updated analytics on the academic fields that the query is related to. In this manner, users will be able to gain an understanding of where their search query is applied in real-world contexts.
  4. On-demand instant download through fuzzy search with Libgen’s database, without the need to visit third party websites.

Naren Sreekanth

Hi Venkat, we are team Dabaogo. We are creating a mobile-centric food delivery service that would create an opportunity for students to not only make money when they go out to have lunch but also to help fellow students get lunch and potentially make new friends. We aim to create not just a food delivery service but a community where students help one another buy lunch and make friends along the way with a small monetary incentive spurring these acts of kindness. Your experience in software development would be instrumental in helping us craft a seamless and most optimized experience for our users. Thus, we would be excited and honoured to have you on board as our mentor. We hope you find our project meaningful and exciting as we are keen on working with you to create an app that can change the way students order food on campus.

Hi Venkat! We are a pair of self-motivated, driven students who are building a platform which enables open-source collaborative development of notes/study material/cheatsheets (like GitHub or Kaggle for notes).

This idea came about as a result of problems we (and our friends) face, and genuinely believe that this would be a useful tool that will greatly enhance the educational outcomes of students everywhere.

We intend to build on an MEVN stack, and believe your experience in web development would greatly benefit our team. We would be grateful and excited to be under your mentorship!

Do reach out to us via the aforementioned contact methods and thank you for your time!
