We think that the current lost and found (LNF) system in NUS is broken, and we want to fix that. Why is it broken? 1. The official lost and found website is unoptimised for mobile (when we lose things, the first thing we do is check using our phones! unless you lost your phone, of course...) 2. Lost item listings are fragmented across multiple platforms, from the official LNF website to various NUS telegram groups. 3. The official LNF system is troublesome for people who want to submit lost items to. They have to go down to a physical LNF counter to register the item. FindNUS aims to make the LNF process as frictionless and seamless as possible, with a mobile-optimised, user-centric search and submit function for LNF items. More details in our proposal ;) Through this project, we hope to not only learn various industry-standard technologies, but also take the opportunity to develop something useful for the NUS community! Thanks for taking time out your busy schedule to mentor for Orbital. We hope that our project vision speaks to you to take us on as your mentees. With your deep knowledge and mentorship, we are sure that we can develop an awesome and well-made web application for the NUS community :)

Dear Varun,
We are a team that has delved into the world of home-based businesses. Having done so, we have realised
that one major issue faced by these businesses is the lack of exposure online. As such, we have decided
to embark on a project to create UnLockal - a mobile application that serves as an online platform for
home-based businesses to promote themselves and facilitate their transactions. We hope to have you
onboard this journey with us as we feel that your field of experience will be crucial
to the success of UnLockal. More specifically, we value your experience in the field of payments as we feel it
would definitely bring the much needed value in guiding our design decision to enable our application to provide
seamless transactions between local business owners and consumers. Furthermore, we value your flexibility in Tech Stacks
as there are numerous Tech Stacks we would like to employ in constructing our application.

We are highly motivated to continuously learn and improve ourselves along
the way in Orbital and we are excited to be able to learn from you during the development of this
project. We look forward to working with you! Thank you for your time!

Best Regard,
UnLockal

Sng Wei Zhen Shanice

Hi Varun!

We are Shanice and Min Xian from Team NUSPlanner.

Our team details are as follows:
Team name: NUSPlanner
Student name: Sng Wei Zhen Shanice & Ong Min Xian
Contact Details (Email): e0774411@u.nus.edu & e0540516@u.nus.edu
Contact Details (Telegram): @sngshanice & @johnongminxian

Our team is proposing a web application that helps students to land their dream job by providing insights on how they allocate their time in three important aspects - work, academics and extracurriculars.

As employers increasingly value technical skills over traditional qualifications, countless undergraduates are struggling to differentiate themselves from the growing pool of skilled competitors in Singapore. With our web application, we are confident that we can make a difference to this issue by reinforcing the need for undergraduates to develop their portfolio holistically from the very beginning, which will be vital to helping them land their dream job.

The biggest selling point of our project would definitely be the use of descriptive tools like bar charts which enable users to derive meaningful insights on their daily activities through a single glance. We will also be providing a dashboard view which allows students to track their productivity, and a progress report which helps students accurately put together a detailed resume based on the activities that they have logged into the planner.

We are aware that you have an open mindset towards all tech stacks and that you are deeply knowledgeable in many areas. Your skills will be an amazing complement to our project, thus we would like to request for you to be our mentor.

We will be most delighted to have you as our mentor because of the vast repertoire of skills that you have gained from your rich working experiences and your commitment towards the highest standards in all projects that you undertake. Similarly, we are a driven team that pays attention to details and strives to deliver the best in all that we do. We are certain that we will be able to learn much from you to create a quality product, and also hope to forge lasting connections with you during and after this mentorship.

More details about our project can be viewed at the following links. On top of the required submissions, we have also prepared a short 1 minute video to demonstrate our prototype.

We hope that our project resonates with you and that you will choose to work with our team.

Thank you for your time and we look forward to hearing from you!

Hello Varun!

We are Venus and Yun Rong from Team Focat, Year 1 Computer Science students who are passionate about software engineering and building reliable and scalable mobile apps. Our project is a productivity mobile app, inspired by a similar one called Forest. As users of Forest ourselves, we have discovered many flaws which we aim to fix with Focat and to further develop features that we wished Forest had. We also aim to publish our app on the app store after Orbital to hopefully provide students with a better productivity mobile app to use.

As it would be our first time working on a software engineer project at this scale on our own, we hope to be able to leverage upon your vast experience as a Software Engineer to guide us and to slingshot our software engineering skills out of orbit! :)

Looking forward to working with you and thank you for your time!

Best Regards,
Venus and Yun Rong

Our Project

Hello Varun,

We are Team planlah (5216) consisting of Jotham and Akash - Year 1 Computer Science students who are passionate about software engineering, machine learning and entrepreneurship. Jotham is currently interning as a data engineer at TikTok’s E-Commerce team who is strongly passionate and has prior experience in machine learning research, while Akash is an ardent developer who has experimented with a lot of technology stacks and infrastructure tooling. Our project seeks to combine both of our interests - we hope to build a social media application that leverages machine learning.

Our proposed application revolves around a personalized recommendation system for activities and places targeted towards groups of friends, in light of the recent changes in SIngapore’s COVID restrictions. Users would be able to create “outings”, groups with their jio-ed friends and family, and get recommended places and activities to do based on the group’s combined interests and location.

We aim to expand this into a commercializable social media application for Singaporeans where we would partner with local F&B and recommend their shops, and then give discounts to interested jio-ers. By allowing Singaporeans to post reviews of the places and activities after visiting them on their social media accounts, we ultimately aim for our product to be the premier Singaporean social media application for social outings.

Our reason for choosing you as our mentor is the wealth of experience and industry insights that you have in software engineering from your time at PayPal. Given your level of experience and wisdom, we would be honored to have your mentorship and perspectives to help shape our long-term aims of reaching a commercially viable market strategy for the application.

Thank you for taking your time to read this message, and we look forward to being your mentees.

Regards,
Jotham and Akash
