Dear Mr Tan

Thank you for offering to be a mentor for our journey through Orbital. We are a team of two highly motivated students who aim to create an exciting mobile application known as AR-mazing. This application will be using the latest Augmented Reality technology to provide an immersive experience in visitor tours etc.

Since this is our first foray into a software project out of a classroom setting, we hope that your excellent background in software engineering will guide us in making the application a success. We are also a team that you might be looking for, as we will be diving into and utilising the latest up and coming AR technology to provide a pleasant user experience for end-users and business owners alike, by turning plain old heritage tours into a fun and interactive one.

As we made our first steps in web development, we realised that while writing static blogs or webpages is easy and quite trivial, adding comments to it is not so simple. Hence we decided to implement a web-based service that helps simplify the process, while still giving users the highest level of customisability possible. We will use Next.js, Node.js with a top priority to UI design and user experience.

After seeing your introductory slide and visiting your portfolio website, we learned that you are experienced with building full-stack applications. We also believe that a pleasant UI/UX design is one of the main factors of a good web application. Hence, we would like to apply for your mentorship during Orbital 2022, as we would really love to learn more about UI/UX design, together with new experiences when building progressive web apps.

Hi Jeremy, we are embarking on a journey to create a space-themed cooperative rogue-like game for deployment on mobile and PC. While we have each completed multiple gamedev projects to varying degrees of success, this will be our greatest undertaking yet. In order to achieve a relatively complete and playable product we will be dedicating a majority of summer towards making our game a success.

Inspired by the greats such as FTL, Pulsar: Lost Colony & Lovers In a Dangerous Spacetime, we are looking to tap into the underrepresented market of cooperative mobile games. We will be attempting to combine the Roguelike and Coop Chaos Simulator genres, leveraging on our prior experience with P2P multiplayer and 2D games respectively.

Hope you will lend us your experience in backend network interfacing to make our project a reality!

Hi there Jeremy,

We are Project FindNUS. We think that the current lost and found (LNF) system in NUS is broken, and we want to fix that.

Why is it broken?

  1. The official lost and found website is unoptimised for mobile (when we lose things, the first thing we do is check using our phones! unless you lost your phone, of course…)
  2. Lost item listings are fragmented across multiple platforms, from the official LNF website to various NUS telegram groups.
  3. The official LNF system is troublesome for people who want to submit lost items to. They have to go down to a physical LNF counter to register the item.

FindNUS aims to make the LNF process as frictionless and seamless as possible, with a mobile-optimised, user-centric search and submit function for LNF items. More details in our proposal ;)

Through this project, we hope to not only learn various industry-standard technologies, but also take the opportunity to develop something useful for the NUS community!

Thanks for taking time out your busy schedule to mentor for Orbital. We hope that our project vision speaks to you to take us on as your mentees. With your deep knowledge and mentorship, we are sure that we can develop an awesome and well-made web application for the NUS community :)

Side note: We chanced upon your portfolio and noticed that you were the one who made Treeckle happen! Nicholas and I are both current CAPTains and we would love to share with you more about our experience and also hear about yours :)

As a game-loving duo, we have decided to use this opportunity to write a love letter to games by realizing our visions for what an ideal game would be. Both agreeing that multiplayer's ability to bring people together was responsible for countless of our fond memories, we think our game should be exactly that for our players.

However, we've always heard that implementing good multiplayer networking in games is extremely challenging. But more so did this pique our interest. We are convinced that it is a worthwhile endeavor that will push us to grasp the intricacies of building a great multiplayer gaming experience. Having seen your work in "Game of Runes" , we believe that your experience in game development as well as networking and database will give us the necessary guidance to design a product that we will be proud of.

While the gameplay is important and a large focus of ours, we are also adamant on designing menu and selection interfaces that are not only user-friendly but has low-friction and are satisfying to use. Undoubtedly, your expertise and guidance in UI/UX would greatly benefit us in both the design and especially the user testing of our game.

Thank you for reading thus far and considering us. We truly hope to be working with you in the future!!! (-:

Wesley Bennett Loo Dela Cruz

Hello Jeremy,

Like many others in NUS Computer Science, Darren and I have spent most of our uni life grinding and studying. However, it has made us wonder if we are genuinely making the most out of our study time as we can often find ourselves distracted by our smart devices or getting thrown weekly assignments (that never seem to end).

We experimented with different study and project management techniques during the semester to solve our itch, such as keeping up with a Kanban-style to-do list and time-tracking how long each homework assignment takes. In addition, we wanted to track better how we performed daily to analyze whether or not we were studying effectively.

Despite seeing improvement in our study habits, we also realized that our workflow for recording our daily tasks was quite repetitive, and we used multiple applications in this process. This realization led wanting to create a web application that solves our problem and hope that it may potentially help other Gen Z students.

We believe that your experience building full-stack web applications and passion for creating great user experiences would make you a great mentor for our team.

Respected sir

Our team, Vacilando, is named for the understanding that the journey is what truly matters. This belief is also interwoven into our project, ModPlaNUS, that is meant to be a web app with the power to optimize every NUS student’s academic journey. While brainstorming project proposals, both of us bonded over our shared woes when it came to navigating the complicated module planning exercise – a step with the power to determine our semester experience.
We hope to develop the app such that it can be a one-stop solution for all module planning related activities for students (current and prospective) such that most processes that we students now do either manually or by jumping from one website to another can be automated into a single smooth experience. In the app, we hope to feature a planner that shall help eliminate the manual process of checking for modules’ prerequisites, corequisites, substitutes, etc.
This shall help students easily manage their majors, minors, tracks and RC requirements. The app would also include a unique CAP calculator, a module info page connecting it to important NUS resources like NUSMods and a chatroom that shall facilitate streamlined information sharing regarding various modules and academic routes.
Your knowledge of web-application development and building progressive apps such as Carina seems especially valuable and particularly relevant to our project. Your experiences from projects such as Treeckle and your internships at ByteDance and Shopee spread over frontend and backend development would not only inspire us to be brave enough to dive deep into our tech stack but also help us learn a lot – both about the nuances of software development and about navigating one’s passion for CS through ventures such as these. Under your mentorship, we are sure to move closer towards our goal and learn a lot along the way. We would be truly excited and very much honored if you choose us to be your mentees, sir.

Looking forward to a positive response
Thank you
Team Vacilando

Hi Jeremy! We’re looking to create an isometric tile-based game, inspired by similar titles such as Final Fantasy Tactics, as well as turn based strategy games like X-Com.

We understand that you have created 2 projects before, Game of Runes and Peggle Island. From the introductory videos, we were intrigued by the polished UI of your projects, which we hope to seek your expertise from. In addition, we have noticed that your projects allow users to customize each map/stage to their desired difficulty levels to suit their personal skill level and improve replayability. These are core concepts that we would like to incorporate into our game as well.

A draft of our story can be obtained here, https://tinyurl.com/story-orbital. This is just a draft, and we are open to changing the storylines in the future. We hope you will consider us as mentees :)

Hi Jeremy,

Hope you are having a great day! Telekinesis Gloves is a unique idea of ours to build a glove that is able to help users control electronic devices around them using gestures. The idea is built out of our interest of hacking things together we felt would genuinely be really cool and interesting ideas, as well as to challenge ourselves to challenge ourselves to build something ambitious but also something we think is really awesome.

Your call for teams who really love hacking things together really struck a chord with us, and we would love to be able to build something interesting with you as our mentor.
