Yew Wei Quan

Hello Jia Le,

We are Ming Wei and Wei Quan from rainyday and are writing to inquire whether you would be interested in serving as our mentor.

Our project involves karaoke software that can be deployed on any computer and aims to create fun and engaging karaoke sessions for anyone. While not targeted at any real-world problems, we hope that our project can bring cheer to karaoke enjoyers around the world, including ourselves.

Software development is a new endeavour for us but we are excited to better our knowledge and skills while working on this project. As a software engineer, your expertise in software development will be an invaluable resource for us and we believe that we can learn a lot about software engineering practices and the industry from you.

Dear Mr Choo

Thank you for offering to be a mentor for our journey through Orbital. We are a team of two highly motivated students who aim to create an exciting mobile application known as AR-mazing. This application will be using the latest Augmented Reality technology to provide an immersive experience in visitor tours etc.

Software engineering is a topic that our team has much to learn, especially from an experienced professional like yourself. Our team hopes to learn as much as possible from your expertise in web development to make our hybrid application run smoothly and free of bugs. Since we are diving deep into a new technology field of Augmented Reality, we hope we can create a new application that can be beneficial to many students and visitors wishing to use our application to learn more about the places around them.

Let’s have fun together and we hope to make our journey in software engineering as memorable as ever.

Our first attempt at building an interactive Figma prototype of PlanNUS (our mobile app name):

Dear Sir, we are developing a mobile application that helps NUS students to keep their student life organised.

Many freshmen in NUS have struggled to adapt to the transition from high school to university, given the increased level of freedom and high workload, which may be overwhelming to begin with. Moreover, we struggle with Module Registration as we may not be aware of any optimal timetable schedules when planning for registration. The application will help freshmen and even seniors to simplify the process with a click of a button.

The function generates a timetable suitable for the student according to his/her needs. If the student is not satisfied with the current configuration, he/she can regenerate until no feasible timetable is found. It utilises traditional A.I known as the SAT solver to find an optimal feasible timetable configuration, if possible. So far we have not found any mobile applications that utilises SAT solvers which could be a much faster alternative than the conventional timetable planner. If it works it could potentially be a game changer for NUS students, especially freshmen. Moreover, we have a to-do list integrated to our calendar where students can view their most urgent tasks.

Logging a task does not necessarily mean that the student would proactively take action, an alarm feature could remind the student a specified duration before the actual submission deadline. LumiNUS (NUS digital learning platform that supports a variety of e-learning applications) logs our uncompleted task but does not remind us of deadlines via notifications. There is a mobile application version of the platform which is poorly designed (e.g. Constantly crashes, no notifications for deadlines – essentially unusable and we normally use the website version instead).

We will be using Android studio, Java, Firebase and Python(to run the solver). Russell has research experience whereas I tinker with operating systems and thus we are new to Android development and Software Engineering in general but we are fast learners and we feel that Orbital is also a good place for us to step out of our comfort zone to try newer technologies. We would highly value your expertise in mobile app development and database systems. We are looking forward to learning a lot from you throughout the mentorship and are hoping to gain insights on how to improve our project. Thank you.

Hi Jia Le! We are a team working on a mobile application which aims to not only simulate colour blindness for users but also allow them to “play” with colours through our unique set of features.
Akin to our lighthearted app, we are looking to have fun creating while challenging ourselves by heading into the uncharted territory of application development! We would greatly value your expertise in mobile app development and database management.
We hope to have you on board our project to be the wind in our sail!

A glimpse into our project

A message for you

Dear Jia Le, before we make our introduction, we would like to extend our warmest welcome to you for joining onboard the Mentoring Team for Orbital 2022. We hope that you have a great time here.

In today's age and society, while video games has replaced much of physical board and card games, we hope to develop a platform to enable tabletop game players and enthusiasts to freely rent and buy/sell their physical tabletop games. Our platform would also feature a community section that allows users to explore and connect with tabletop players and interest groups around them physically, and feature regular events for users to participate.

The following tech stack will be used for this project:

1) Mobile Development (By Wen Jun)
Flutter

2) Web Development (By Marcus)
React/Redux
TypeScript
React Testing Library/Jest

3) Backend Development (By Wen Jun)
ExpressJS (Server) / Cloud Function or AWS (Serverless)
Auth: Firebase
Database: Firebase / MongoDB
File Storage: Firebase Cloud Storage / AWS S3

We have prior experience in both front- and back-end web development through our Hall's Developers CCA, where we create a web app for our hall to facilitate residents' lives. By leveraging on your expertise and mentorship, we believe that we can maximise our technical capabilities and create the most value out of our project. Last but not least, we hope that we can deepen our knowledge in mobile and web development practices and methodologies from you during the process and have fun!

The 100 Club - A Validated Concept with 20+ Interested Student Founders

Hi Jia Le, thank you for volunteering to be part of Orbital. We believe your skillsets + prior experiences as a Software Engineer, would make a great fit for our team, and we would love the opportunity to work together + learn from you. We’ve got a proven, validated concept, and a motivated team that will ensure strong initiative + planning frameworks to reduce any operational concerns on your end.

Entrepreneurship is difficult - it’s lonely, it’s tough to hold yourself accountable, and it’s not easy to explore uncharted territories. That is why our team is currently building The 100 Club, which is a mastermind community, that matches entrepreneurial individuals into groups of 4, in order for them to support each other in staying accountable, sharing advice, and networking to grow their business. We plan on supporting this community by building an exclusive membership platform (web application).

It is an idea that we are going to expand/commercialise in the future and we have already found traction with over 20+ student founders keen on joining us. Feel free to check out our material below! We hope you consider our proposal favourably and look forward to hearing from you. Cheers.

Dear Mr Choo,
We are PokerBros and we bring a unique and engaging problem forward. Given the easing of gambling rules in Singapore, we wish to create an app which can upskill the public in one of the most popular games in the world, Poker. Learning the basic mathematical and statistical theories underlying poker can help to exponentially improve one's game. As such, we wish to serve beginners/intermediate players and introduce them to the technicalities of poker. Personally, we decided to create this project as we are passionate about playing poker and it took us months to understand the game better. With the experience and expertise we have, we wish to educate those freshly entering into the game to prevent them from losing money when playing poker. Our game has special features mentioned in our proposal and video.
It would be great to have you mentor us and advise us throughout the journey. We believe your expertise in Mobile app + database would be perfect and extremely beneficial in our roadmap to complete our fun and meaningful project. It would be pretty cool if you play poker too!

Regards,
Devanshu Bisht and Ang Yuze
