Dear Jian Jie,

Good day to you!

We are seeking for a mentor to guide us through the development of our web application, Easylink. Our product aims to link university students with each other and with projects based on their skills and interests to make university life more eventful. More details of Easylink can be found in our proposal, poster and video.

Your experience with UI/UX and engineering would be of great value to our team, as we do not have much experience with UI/UX. Additionally, the tech stack you have experience with (Postgres/Supabase, React) is roughly what we plan to use for Easylink.

We are very excited to have you as our mentor. Please feel free to reach out to us through Telegram or email!

Thank you for your time!

Kind regards,
Cheng Yi and Huzaifa

Silas Tay

Hello Jian Jie!

We are Silas and Bryan from Team Head in the Clouds! We are contactable via email e0726509@u.nus.edu (Bryan) and e0725425@u.nus.edu (Silas). Here is a link to our poster, proposal and video: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Ldla7bUpmy4L3Pp85xVyI6swKcQN8zNH?usp=sharing

The main motivation behind creating this application is the overly complex task manager in the market today. As such we wanted to create something that is simple yet effective. Inspired by the concept of bullet journalling, our project Striker was born – a task manager application that focuses on getting the job done, without the superfluous design. We are using React from the frontend and Go for the backend.

We feel that your experience with UI/UX design and the developing of your own start-up is extremely inspiring and we would love to have you as our mentor. Your passion for creating software with purpose really resonates with us and we hope that you choose to mentor us. Thank you!

Regards,
Silas and Bryan

Personalised message:

As we made our first steps in web development, we realised that while writing static blogs or webpages is easy and quite trivial, adding comments to it is not so simple. Hence we decided to implement a web-based service that helps simplify the process, while still giving users the highest level of customisability possible. We will use Next.js, Node.js with a top priority to UI design and user experience.

After seeing your introductory slide and visiting Mobbin's website, we were impressed by its designs. We believe that a good and modern UI/UX design is one of the main factors deciding whether a website is good or not. Hence, we would like to apply for your mentorship during Orbital 2022, as we would really love to learn more about UI/UX design, as well as general software project management and technical skills from your mentorship.

Also, on closer inspection, we found out that Mobbin also uses Next.js, which is exactly the tech stack we will be using. Your guidance would be valuable for us to improve our Next.js experience.

Dear Mr Jian Jie,

We are Justin and Yue Hern from TheSocialPitstop, an online community connecting businesses and socially-oriented organisations for corporate social responsibility projects! There are many benefits for businesses to get involved in CSR activities, yet many companies, especially SMEs, struggle to plan an initiative that is both meaningful and enjoyable for their employees. Through our web and mobile applications, we aim to promote and streamline collaboration between these businesses and like-minded SOOs, and increase the adoption of CSR among businesses in Singapore.

Given that Mobbin uses Next.js, we foresee that our project might greatly interest you. We hope that not only will we be able to tap on your expertise to create a meaningful product, but that we can also exchange ideas and discuss insights about the relevant industries. Looking forward to working with you!

Hi Jian Jie!

We are Dylen and Jiayong from GetMeOut!. Dylen is a Year 1 Computer Science Student while Jiayong is a Year 1 Business Analytics Student.

Have you ever felt restless in Singapore and can’t wait to travel anywhere else? Yet, planning for travel is always the most difficult and tedious process when travelling. To make matters worse, there are even more processes and steps to take while travelling now due to Covid-19. As the world begins to move past Covid-19, restarting travel, we aim to make travelling easier and accessible to everyone.

We will be creating ‘GetMeOut!’, a cross platform mobile app envisioned to be the one in all travel solution for travellers on the go by providing important trip/travel information through the app as well as storing individual traveller’s documents and details. What makes ‘GetMeOut!’ unique is its Covid-19 features, users will be able to check for restrictions between countries such as quarantine and vaccination requirements. Users will also be able to save vaccination and Covid-19 test records for easier access during travel.

Our application will be heavily dependent on a strong backend as most of the information such as current travel restrictions will be queried from a server. This is similar to Mobbin's library where the content is stored server side and the website queries for content every time the user opens the website.

We have taken a look at your LinkedIn and GitHub and we noticed that you are the CTO and Co-founder at Mobbin. Developing such a library must have required significant back-end and UI/UX knowledge, which is exactly the kind of experience we need. With your experience in various Software Engineer roles and projects, we believe that there is plenty of overlap between what you already know and what we need to learn, hence we sincerely hope that we can work on Orbital together and learn from you.

We will be using Flutter for the frontend and postgres/Supabase for the backend. Jiayong has some experience as a Software Engineer Intern while I have mostly been tinkering around with my own Front-End projects. That aside, we are fast learners and we are always looking to learn from others, especially with regards to new tech stacks and industry-related experiences.

Last but no least, thank you for contributing your time to mentor the next batch of computing graduates. We are excited to work with you and we hope to hear from you soon!

Hello,Jian Jie! I'm sure social media has made it simpler for us to communicate with our friends, but are we truly connecting or simply drifting apart? ☹️  We believe that busy schedules or the inconvenience of planning what to eat and do often gets in the way of getting to hang out with our friends. Our app aims to restore human touch to friendships which social media lacks! We hope to foster genuine friendships, encouraging people to spend quality time with their loved ones by making outing planning easier and suggesting fun new activities and food options for everyone to explore around Singapore! We really enjoyed the process of designing the cute UX/UI of our application alongside its fun functionalities and hope that your eye for UX/UI design likes it too! We'd appreciate your help in making this project a reality and sharing it with our friends!

We are happy to address any of your concerns! join this unique Telegram group with the both of us https://t.me/+b8P6HzQF2CJlZTk1

As a game-loving duo, we have decided to use this opportunity to write a love letter to games by realizing our visions for what an ideal game would be. Both agreeing that multiplayer's ability to bring people together was responsible for countless of our fond memories, we think our game should be exactly that for our players.

However, we've always heard that implementing good multiplayer networking in games is extremely challenging. But more so did this pique our interest. We are convinced that it is a worthwhile endeavor that will push us to grasp the intricacies of building a great multiplayer gaming experience. We believe that your experience in networking and database will give us the necessary guidance to design a product that we will be proud of.

While the gameplay is important and a large focus of ours, we are also adamant on designing menu and selection interfaces that are not only user-friendly but has low-friction and are satisfying to use. Undoubtedly, your expertise and guidance in UI/UX would greatly benefit us in both the design and user testing of our game.

Thank you for reading thus far and considering us. We truly hope to be working with you in the future!!! (-:

Wesley Bennett Loo Dela Cruz

Hello Jian Jie,

Like many others in NUS Computer Science, Darren and I have spent most of our uni life grinding and studying. However, it has made us wonder if we are genuinely making the most out of our study time as we can often find ourselves distracted by our smart devices or getting thrown weekly assignments (that never seem to end).

We experimented with different study and project management techniques during the semester to solve our itch, such as keeping up with a Kanban-style to-do list and time-tracking how long each homework assignment takes. In addition, we wanted to track better how we performed daily to analyze whether or not we were studying effectively.

Despite seeing improvement in our study habits, we also realized that our workflow for recording our daily tasks was quite repetitive, and we used multiple applications in this process. This realization led wanting to create a web application that solves our problem and hope that it may potentially help other Gen Z students.

We believe that your experience leading your own tech startup and passion for building impactful software would make you a great mentor for our team.

A glimpse into our project

A message for you

Dear Jian Jie, before we make our introduction, we would like to extend our warmest welcome to you for joining onboard the Mentoring Team for Orbital 2022. We hope that you have a great time here.

In today's age and society, while video games has replaced much of physical board and card games, we hope to develop a platform to enable tabletop game players and enthusiasts to freely rent and buy/sell their physical tabletop games. Our platform would also feature a community section that allows users to explore and connect with tabletop players and interest groups around them physically, and feature regular events for users to participate.

The following tech stack will be used for this project:

1) Mobile Development (By Wen Jun)
Flutter

2) Web Development (By Marcus)
React/Redux
TypeScript
React Testing Library/Jest

3) Backend Development (By Wen Jun)
ExpressJS (Server) / Cloud Function or AWS (Serverless)
Auth: Firebase
Database: Firebase / MongoDB
File Storage: Firebase Cloud Storage / AWS S3

We believe we can leverage on your expertise in both UI/UX and experience design and Software Engineering to create a comprehensive product.

We have prior experience in both front- and back-end web development through our Hall's Developers CCA, where we create a web app for our hall to facilitate residents' lives. While we believe we have the foundational technical skills for our project, we would desire having mentorship on the other aspects of software development, especially UI/UX, design and the Product Scope, as we recognise that good designs, UI/UX and product scopes are equally important than the technical/code aspects of web and app development, since applications and websites are ultimately designed for use by people.

Therefore, by leveraging on your expertise and mentorship, we believe that we can maximise our technical capabilities and create the most value out of our project.

Dear Jian Jie,

We are team EzOrder, we aim to create a telegram bot that is simple to use, user friendly and innovative that can be used to collate orders.

Both Wei Guan and I are NUS student staying on campus and we constantly encounter countless issues when having to manually create order lists on our Telegram group chats. We feel that our Orbital Project has the potential to solve all of these issues, provide much more, and could be indispensable to many Telegram group chats. We hope that with your vast experience and knowledge on software engineering we could fulfil this potential.

Do reach out to us using our email or telegram handles! We look forward to your favourable reply.

The 100 Club - A Validated Concept with 20+ Interested Student Founders

Hi Jian Jie, thank you for volunteering to be part of Orbital. We believe your skillsets + prior experiences as a Software Engineer + CTO of Mobbin, would be a great fit for our team, and would love the opportunity to work together + learn from you. We’ve got a proven, validated concept, and a motivated team that will ensure strong initiative + planning frameworks to reduce any operational concerns on your end.

Entrepreneurship is difficult - it’s lonely, it’s tough to hold yourself accountable, and it’s not easy to explore uncharted territories. It’s likely something you’ve struggled with as well. That is why our team is currently building The 100 Club, which is a mastermind community, that matches entrepreneurial individuals into groups of 4, in order for them to support each other in staying accountable, sharing advice, and networking to grow their business. We plan on supporting this community by building an exclusive membership platform (web application).

It is an idea that we are going to expand/commercialise in the future and we have already found traction with over 20+ student founders keen on joining us. Feel free to check out our material below! We hope you consider our proposal favourably and look forward to hearing from you. Cheers.

Dear Jian Jie,
We are PokerBros and we bring a unique and engaging problem forward. Given the easing of gambling rules in Singapore, we wish to create an app which can upskill the public in one of the most popular games in the world, Poker. Learning the basic mathematical and statistical theories underlying poker can help to exponentially improve one's game. As such, we wish to serve beginners/intermediate players and introduce them to the technicalities of poker. Personally, we decided to create this project as we are passionate about playing poker and it took us months to understand the game better. With the experience and expertise we have, we wish to educate those freshly entering into the game to prevent them from losing money when playing poker. Our game has special features mentioned in our proposal and video.
It would be great to have you mentor us and advise us throughout the journey. We believe your expertise in web and database will prove extremely beneficial in our roadmap to complete our project fun and meaningful project. It would be pretty fun and exciting if you play poker too!

Liau Jian Jie

Hi folks,

Thank you all for your videos and personal write up! All your projects sound pretty cool. Unfortunately, I am only able to mentor 1 team this year. I've already reached out to the team I'm likely to work with. So if you did not receive a message from me, you can take it as that you're not selected.

Even if you were not selected by me, I do have an advice for all the teams here:

Use Supabase, not Firebase.

Firebase's API and design is completely proprietary—whereas Supabase is built on top of Postgres, an SQL database. What you picked up with Firebase will likely not be transferable to most other databases. Whereas if you went with Supabase, you will be learning SQL—a highly valuable skill for backend engineers, full-stack engineers, and data scientists.
