I'm sure with social media has made it easier for us to contact our friends, but are we really connecting or simply drifting apart 🙁 We believe that busy schedules or the inconvenience of planning what to eat and do often gets in the way of getting to hang out with our friends. Our app aims to restore restore human touch to friendships which social media lacks! We hope to foster genuine friendships, encouraging people to spend quality time with their loved ones by making outing planning easier and suggesting fun new activities and food options for everyone to explore around Singapore! We really enjoyed the process of designing the cute UX/UI of our application alongside its fun functionalities and hope that your eye for UX/UI design likes it too! We are really excited about making this project a reality and have our friends use it frequently! We are Dylen and Jiayong from GetMeOut!. Dylen is a Year 1 Computer Science Student while Jiayong is a Year 1 Business Analytics Student. Have you ever felt restless in Singapore and can’t wait to travel anywhere else? Yet, planning for travel is always the most difficult and tedious process when travelling. To make matters worse, there are even more processes and steps to take while travelling now due to Covid-19. As the world begins to move past Covid-19, restarting travel, we aim to make travelling easier and accessible to everyone. We will be creating ‘GetMeOut!’, a cross platform mobile app envisioned to be the one in all travel solution for travellers on the go by providing important trip/travel information through the app as well as storing individual traveller’s documents and details. What makes ‘GetMeOut!’ unique is its Covid-19 features, users will be able to check for restrictions between countries such as quarantine and vaccination requirements. Users will also be able to save vaccination and Covid-19 test records for easier access during travel. Our application will be heavily dependent on a strong backend as most of the information such as current travel restrictions will be queried from a server. This is similar to Shopee where the content is stored server side and the app queries for content every time the user opens the app. We have taken a look at your LinkedIn and we noticed that although you are now primarily a UX designer, you have immense experience with mentoring Orbital Projects and no doubt we will have much to learn from you and the lessons you might have to share with regards to teams in the past years. We will be using Flutter for the frontend and postgres/Supabase for the backend. Jiayong has some experience as a Software Engineer Intern while I have mostly been tinkering around with my own Front-End projects. That aside, we are fast learners and we are always looking to learn from others, especially with regards to new tech stacks and industry-related experiences. Last but no least, thank you for contributing your time to mentor the next batch of computing graduates. We are excited to work with you and we hope to hear from you soon! -Dylen and Jiayong

As a game-loving duo, we have decided to use this opportunity to write a love letter to games by realizing our visions for what an ideal game would be. We believe that your experience in game development will give us the necessary guidance to design a product that we will be proud of.

While the gameplay is important and a large focus of ours, we are also adamant on designing menu and selection interfaces that are not only user-friendly but has low-friction and are satisfying to use. Undoubtedly, your expertise and guidance in UI/UX would greatly benefit us in both the design and user testing of our game.

Thank you for reading thus far and considering us. We truly hope to be working with you in the future!!! (-:

Wesley Bennett Loo Dela Cruz

Hello Candiie,

Like many others in NUS Computer Science, Darren and I have spent most of our uni life grinding and studying. However, it has made us wonder if we are genuinely making the most out of our study time as we can often find ourselves distracted by our smart devices or getting thrown weekly assignments (that never seem to end).

We experimented with different study and project management techniques during the semester to solve our itch, such as keeping up with a Kanban-style to-do list and time-tracking how long each homework assignment takes. In addition, we wanted to track better how we performed daily to analyze whether or not we were studying effectively.

Despite seeing improvement in our study habits, we also realized that our workflow for recording our daily tasks was quite repetitive, and we used multiple applications in this process. This realization led wanting to create a web application that solves our problem and hope that it may potentially help other Gen Z students.

We would love to tap on your experience from web development to product design to create a meaningful solution. In addition, we believe that your experience building impactful solutions would make you a great mentor for our team.

Hello Candie,
We are Team JavaBean. What we are doing for this Summer is to create a pixel perfect, Open-World RPG Style Game that utilises NoSQL Cloud database - Firebase for a virtual trading platform. Throughout last semester, we have been incessantly brainstorming our lore and what the game would be like, I hope our proposal would pique your interest in mentoring our team.

We are highly driven by our ambition to bring what we could've only dreamed of a few months ago into reality. We wanted to share with the world our story in a beautiful package in the form of a game:

Even though we only have 2.5 months, we would like to work on an area that is trending the most in the tech community - blockchain, so that we can better understand how these things work. This is why we are challenging ourselves by ambitiously infusing NFT with all the in-game assets! Despite our previous experiences in creating other projects, we are still 2 Y1 CS students, thus we lacked the direction in adhering to and implementing good software engineering skills and principles, especially in the testing department. We are also not well-versed in UI/UX design. This is why we look forward to your guidance in helping our team to reach our potential and to make this game a success!

Thank you!
Team JavaBean.

Hello Candiie!

We are Venus and Yun Rong from Team Focat, Year 1 Computer Science students who are passionate about software engineering and building reliable and scalable mobile apps. Our project is a productivity mobile app, inspired by a similar one called Forest. As users of Forest ourselves, we have discovered many flaws which we aim to fix with Focat and to further develop features that we wished Forest had. We also aim to publish our app on the app store after Orbital to hopefully provide students with a better productivity mobile app to use.

As it would be our first time working on a mobile app development project at such scale, we hope to be able to leverage upon your experience as a software engineer turned product designer to guide us both in our code and especially in our UX/UI which we think is arguably as important as the code itself! :p

Looking forward to learning from you and thank you for your time!

Best Regards,
Venus and Yun Rong

Hi Ms Chuan Wei,

Hope this finds you well! Our project, Telekinesis Gloves is a unique idea of ours to build a glove that is able to help users control electronic devices around them using gestures. While we both have some experiences in the possible technologies we are building, we are also trying our new hardware sensors and software ideas that we are unfamiliar as we want to challenge ourselves to go out of our comfort zone. It is an interesting idea that we came up with that we found not out of a problem in our everyday lives, but purely out of interest, and it was something both of thought would be genuinely fun, challenging and really cool to build.

As our project is quite unorthodox and unique compared to other projects, we felt that your call to look for teams who wanted to build something fun out of passion, and to be creative, challenging and ambitious really resonated with us, and we would love if you would be willing to mentor us in our project.

Feel free to reach out to us if you have any queries, we would love to answer them, at @chunyulam or @Iantensoku on telegram!

Hello Candiie,

We are a team working on a pixel art interactive visual novel that tells the story of a college student doing a game development project. Our game consists of non-linear gameplay, and the game’s plotline is influenced by the decisions that the player makes.

The main idea of our game is that even though we may regret the decisions we made in the past it is also these choices that made us who we are today. We want the players to be able to understand the message that we want to convey through playing our game as well as developing one of their own inside our game. This idea originates from the interactive movie Black Mirror: Bandersnatch. We have also played several games with a similar concept, such as Life is Strange, Detroit: Become Human, Emily is Away and Needy Streamer Overdose. These games inspire us for some of the features that we are going to make.

Your interest in game design and interactive storytelling aligns with our project's idea so we believe that your guidance will be strongly relevant to the development of our game. We genuinely hope that we can have this opportunity to learn from you so please do consider our team.

Feel free to contact any of us and we look forward to hearing from you. Thank you!

We are making a game about an insurgency set in a dystopian sci-fi future where artificial intelligence has completely taken over governance and human resource allocation.

Personalised Message:

Hi Candiie! We’re looking to create an isometric tile-based game, inspired by similar titles such as Final Fantasy Tactics, as well as turn based strategy games like X-COM.

We understand that one of the areas you're looking to provide guidance in is game development. Specifically, we are particularly motivated in ensuring good UX/UI design of both our combat system and our dialogue system. We were inspired particularly by the incredible UI of other character-driven games, such as Persona 5, and we understand it's importance in making or breaking the whole experience of the player. As with all game development projects, there are a lot of moving parts (e.g: Sprite generation, music design, script writing), and we could use some guidance in the planning and testing phases!

A draft of our story can be obtained here, https://tinyurl.com/story-orbital. We are open to adapting the storylines in the future. We'd describe ourselves as a passionate and fun-loving team, and we hope you'll consider us to be your mentees xD

Hello Candiie,

We are StuBid (Year 1 CS and IS Students), also known as ‘Student Bidders’ who aims to innovate a one-stop mobile application (Similar to trading marketplace like Carousell) to allow students from all Singapore Universities to conveniently buy or sell unwanted items online through an anonymous bidding system.

The main theme of StuBid is ‘Anonymity’ which allows students to maintain their privacy and confidentiality, before/during the bidding process. Sellers can auction off their items to potential buyers, while buyers can submit their bid according to their preferred budget. When the final bid is accepted between the Seller and Buyer (Winning Bidder), the ‘Anonymity’ profile by both students will be released to each other (Contact details/information etc) where further transaction can take place.

Moreover, we realise that there is currently no online platform catered specifically for students in NUS or other universities to be able to buy/sell unwanted items. Therefore, StuBid not only serves as a marketplace for students, but also provide much needed convenience, assurance and freedom for students who wish to sell/buy items on an online platform.

We are highly motivated and hardworking individuals who have good interest in mobile development and other related applications. While we lack experience in software development, we are willing to put in our utmost effort to learn along the way. We wish to create a holistic and scalable application that can make a positive impact, as well as meeting the needs of our users. Our main goal is to learn something new, develop something cool, as well as having a fun, meaningful and memorable time together throughout the programme.

Feel free to contact us if our project resonates with you and we would be happy to schedule a call with you to discuss further.

Thank you and have a great day ahead!

A glimpse into our project

A message for you

Hello Candiie, before we make our introduction, we would like to extend our warmest welcome to you for joining onboard the Mentoring Team for Orbital 2022. We hope that you have a great time here.

In today's age and society, while video games has replaced much of physical board and card games, we hope to develop a platform to enable tabletop game players and enthusiasts to freely rent and buy/sell their physical tabletop games. Our platform would also feature a community section that allows users to explore and connect with tabletop players and interest groups around them physically, and feature regular events for users to participate.

The following tech stack will be used for this project:

1) Mobile Development (By Wen Jun)
Flutter

2) Web Development (By Marcus)
React/Redux
TypeScript
React Testing Library/Jest

3) Backend Development (By Wen Jun)
ExpressJS (Server) / Cloud Function or AWS (Serverless)
Auth: Firebase
Database: Firebase / MongoDB
File Storage: Firebase Cloud Storage / AWS S3

We believe we can leverage on your expertise in both UI/UX and experience design and Software Engineering to create a comprehensive product.

We have prior experience in both front- and back-end web development through our Hall's Developers CCA, where we create a web app for our hall to facilitate residents' lives. While we believe we have the foundational technical skills for our project, we would desire having mentorship on the other aspects of software development, especially UI/UX, design and the Product Scope, as we recognise that good designs, UI/UX and product scopes are equally important than the technical/code aspects of web and app development, since applications and websites are ultimately designed for use by people.

Therefore, by leveraging on your expertise and mentorship, we believe that we can maximise our technical capabilities and create the most value out of our project.
