Hi Zheng Dong! We are a pair of self-motivated, driven students who are building a platform which enables open-source collaborative development of notes/study material/cheatsheets (like GitHub or Kaggle for notes).

This idea came about as a result of problems we (and our friends) face, and genuinely believe that this would be a useful tool that will greatly enhance the educational outcomes of students everywhere.

We intend to build on an MEVN stack, and believe your experience in server-side backend development and system design would greatly benefit our team and your interest in solving real life problems closely aligns with us. We would be grateful and excited to be under your mentorship!

Do reach out to us via the aforementioned contact methods and thank you for your time!

A glimpse into our project

A message for you
Hi Zheng Dong, before we make our introduction, we would like to extend our warmest welcome to you for joining onboard the Mentoring Team for Orbital 2022. We hope that you have a great time here.

In today's age and society, physical board and card games are no longer a commonsight and we hope to develop a platform that not only rents out board games, but also monthly events as well as communities. Through this application, we hope to rekindle the kampong spirit, form a close knitted community as well as have a respite from the daily hectic lifestyle. The following tech stack will be used for this project:

1) Mobile Development (By Wen Jun)

  • Flutter

2) Web Development (By Marcus)

  • React
  • TypeScript
  • NextJS

3) Backend Development (By Wen Jun)

  • ExpressJS (Server) / Cloud Function or AWS (Serverless)
  • Auth: Firebase
  • Database: Firebase / MongoDB
  • File Storage: Firebase Cloud Storage / AWS S3

You might be wondering, why is the backend so undecided? This is because Wen Jun is currently making careful planning for the backend. As we mentioned before, this application is going live and we are targeting the entire Singapore population, so we need to make careful planning. We intend to take it one step further and design our app such that it is reliable, on top of maintainability and scalability. This means that we will be adopting fault finding in our system and adopting chaos testing and this is where we require your expertise in making our product a reality. Please do not hesitate to contact us to find out more about us.

We are Dylen and Jiayong from GetMeOut!. Dylen is a Year 1 Computer Science Student while Jiayong is a Year 1 Business Analytics Student. Have you ever felt restless in Singapore and can’t wait to travel anywhere else? Yet, planning for travel is always the most difficult and tedious process when travelling. To make matters worse, there are even more processes and steps to take while travelling now due to Covid-19. As the world begins to move past Covid-19, restarting travel, we aim to make travelling easier and accessible to everyone. We will be creating ‘GetMeOut!’, a cross platform mobile app envisioned to be the one in all travel solution for travellers on the go by providing important trip/travel information through the app as well as storing individual traveller’s documents and details. What makes ‘GetMeOut!’ unique is its Covid-19 features, users will be able to check for restrictions between countries such as quarantine and vaccination requirements. Users will also be able to save vaccination and Covid-19 test records for easier access during travel. Our application will be heavily dependent on a strong backend as most of the information such as current travel restrictions will be queried from a server. This is similar to Tiktok where the content is stored server side and the app queries for content every time the user opens the app. We have taken a look at your LinkedIn and we noticed that you have immense experience as a Software Engineer. With your knowledge from work at ByteDance, we believe that there is plenty of overlap between what you already know and what we need to learn, hence we sincerely hope that we can work on Orbital together and learn from you. We will be using Flutter for the frontend and postgres/Supabase for the backend. Jiayong has some experience as a Software Engineer Intern while I have mostly been tinkering around with my own Front-End projects. That aside, we are fast learners and we are always looking to learn from others, especially with regards to new tech stacks and industry-related experiences. Last but not least, thank you for contributing your time to mentor the next batch of computing graduates. We are excited to work with you and we hope to hear from you soon! -Dylen and Jiayong

Dear Zheng Dong,
We are a team that has delved into the world of home-based businesses. Having done so, we have realised
that one major issue faced by these businesses is the lack of exposure online. As such, we have decided
to embark on a project to create UnLockal - a mobile application that serves as an online platform for
home-based businesses to promote themselves and facilitate their transactions. We hope to have you
onboard this journey with us as we feel that your field of experience will be crucial
to the success of UnLockal. More specifically, we feel that your specialisation in server side development
would add tremendous value to the design decisions as our project employs an online database of stores, users,
and their orders. We also feel that our project solves a real world problem that contributes back to our
local community and hence hopes it aligns with your vision of what you are looking for in a project.

We are highly motivated to continuously learn and improve ourselves along
the way in Orbital and we are excited to be able to learn from you during the development of this
project. We look forward to working with you! Thank you for your time!

Best Regard,
UnLockal

Loh Yi Kuang

Hi Zheng Dong!

Nice to meet you. We are Jing En and Yi Kuang, and we would love to have the honour of you mentoring us for our project.

Our project - Pilot is an extension of conventional academic search engines on the open web. Combining features such as instant click downloads, field-related analytics and the ability to curate personal archives, we aim to liberate and revolutionise the way we browse academic papers. Project Pilot combines the functionalities of JSTOR's constellate API, Google Scholar and Library Genesis, to allow users to browse, save and download research papers for free on demand, on top of other additional features.

Features

  1. Our intended recommendation algorithm will allow users to spend less time searching while gaining access to the most relevant & curated academic papers.
  2. Every student knows how annoying it is to lose a paper that you saw somewhere, somehow, a long time ago. Pilot’s personal database will allow users to store papers with the click of a button, storing it into their own database for later reference. No more frustration of losing your papers!
  3. Updated analytics on the academic fields that the query is related to. In this manner, users will be able to gain an understanding of where their search query is applied in real-world contexts.
  4. On-demand instant download through fuzzy search with Libgen’s database, without the need to visit third party websites.

Dear Mr Zheng Dong,

Our team aims to build a web application, WellNUS, that tackles this problem by matching students to a group of like-minded peers that will act as a peer support system and improve the accessibility of counselling by utilising volunteer counsellors in addition to professionals. Therefore, we hope to contribute to the improvement in the mental health of students, especially NUS students. We hope that we can learn from your expertise and experience in TikTok by working with you on this Orbital project.

Yours Sincerely,
Team State

Hi Mr Zheng Dong, we are team hALLinOne! After looking at your introduction, we would love to have you as our mentor, as we believe your experience would be of great value to us. We hope to be able to gain some insights on mobile application development from your experience at TikTok, and be able to create a whole functional system, since we hope to eventually not only create a working application but have it tied in with a telegram bot as well. We hope our application is what you are looking for since it solves a real-life problem of booking using telegram chats in halls and residences in NUS (and potentially scalable in the future to other Universities as well, if they face such issues, or for other bookings)

Our project seeks to centralise and facilitate the bookings of common facilities in student accommodations in NUS, and also have a social function for “jios”. We discovered that currently, block chats are being used to book facilities such as the lounge, or ask people to clear their laundry in the washing machines or dryers for others to use, which we find ineffective. Hence, we propose the all-in-one “hALLinOne” mobile application to address this.

Wesley Bennett Loo Dela Cruz

Hello Zheng Dong,

Like many others in NUS Computer Science, Darren and I have spent most of our uni life grinding and studying. However, it has made us wonder if we are genuinely making the most out of our study time as we often get distracted by our own smart devices or slack off.

We used different study and project management techniques during the semester to solve our itch, such as keeping up with a Kanban-style to-do list and time-tracking how long each homework assignment takes. In addition, we wanted to track better how we performed daily to analyze whether or not we were studying effectively.

Despite seeing improvement in our study habits, we also realized that our workflow for recording our daily tasks was quite repetitive, and we used multiple applications in this process. This realization led wanting to create a web application that solves our problem and hope that it may potentially help other Gen Z students.

We believe that your working experience as a SWE and passion for building impactful software would make you a great mentor for our team.
