Our first attempt at building an interactive Figma prototype of PlanNUS (our mobile app name):
https://www.figma.com/proto/SXhEjNftLSG23t3oRbmvV7/PlanNUS?node-id=2594%3A5999&scaling=scale-down&page-id=243%3A1&starting-point-node-id=2594%3A5982

Dear Sir, we are developing a mobile application that helps NUS students to keep their student life organised.

Many freshmen in NUS have struggled to adapt to the transition from high school to university, given the increased level of freedom and high workload, which may be overwhelming to begin with. Moreover, we struggle with Module Registration as we may not be aware of any optimal timetable schedules when planning for registration. The application will help freshmen and even seniors to simplify the process with a click of a button.

The function generates a timetable suitable for the student according to his/her needs. If the student is not satisfied with the current configuration, he/she can regenerate until no feasible timetable is found. It utilises traditional A.I known as the SAT solver to find an optimal feasible timetable configuration, if possible. So far we have not found any mobile applications that utilises SAT solvers which could be a much faster alternative than the conventional timetable planner. If it works it could potentially be a game changer for NUS students, especially freshmen. Moreover, we have a to-do list integrated to our calendar where students can view their most urgent tasks.

Logging a task does not necessarily mean that the student would proactively take action, an alarm feature could remind the student a specified duration before the actual submission deadline. LumiNUS (NUS digital learning platform that supports a variety of e-learning applications) logs our uncompleted task but does not remind us of deadlines via notifications. There is a mobile application version of the platform which is poorly designed (e.g. Constantly crashes, no notifications for deadlines – essentially unusable and we normally use the website version instead).

We will be using Android studio, Java, Firebase and Python(to run the solver). Russell has research experience whereas I tinker with operating systems and thus we are new to Android development and Software Engineering in general but we are fast learners and we feel that Orbital is also a good place for us to step out of our comfort zone to try newer technologies. We would highly value your expertise in Android development and unit testing. We are looking forward to learning a lot from you throughout the mentorship and are hoping to gain insights on how to improve our project. Thank you.

Our project seeks to centralise and facilitate the bookings of common facilities in student accommodations in NUS, and also have a social function for “jios”. We discovered that currently, block chats are being used to book these facilities such as the lounge, or to ask people to clear their laundry in the washing machines or dryers for others to use, which we find ineffective. Hence, we propose the all-in-one “hALLinOne” mobile application to address this.
Personal message:
Good day to you Mr Boon, we are team hALLinOne! Seeing some of your experiences, we would love to be working alongside and receiving guidance from you. As we are building a mobile application that can actually be used by students staying in residences, which we find that while it has been attempted in our hall, has not really come to fruition. Hence, we need our application to perform to the best that it can, and thus we would love to have your mentorship and expertise in testing and performance optimization to help us achieve the standard we strive for. Our team is trying to learn as much as we can, in both front and back end, and we hope that with your experience and guidance, we will be able to complete this Orbital project over summer!

Hello Mr Boon,

We are StuBid (Year 1 CS and IS students), also known as ‘Student Bidders’ who aims to innovate a one-stop mobile application (Similar to trading marketplace like Carousell) to allow students from all Singapore Universities to conveniently buy or sell unwanted items online through an anonymous bidding system.

The main theme of StuBid is ‘Anonymity’ which allows students to maintain their privacy and confidentiality, before/during the bidding process. Sellers can auction off their items to potential buyers, while buyers can submit their bid according to their preferred budget. When the final bid is accepted between the Seller and Buyer (Winning Bidder), the ‘Anonymity’ profile by both students will be released to each other (Contact details/information etc) where further transaction can take place.

Moreover, we realise that there is currently no online platform catered specifically for students in NUS or other universities to be able to buy/sell unwanted items. Therefore, StuBid not only serves as a marketplace for students, but also provide much needed convenience, assurance and freedom for students who wish to sell/buy items on an online platform.

We are highly motivated and hardworking individuals who have good interest in mobile development and other related applications. While we lack experience in software development, we are willing to put in our utmost effort to learn along the way. We wish to create a holistic and scalable application that can make a positive impact, as well as meeting the needs of our users. Our main goal is to learn something new, develop something cool, as well as having a fun, meaningful and memorable time together throughout the programme.

We strongly believe that your invaluable experience in mobile app development at Tiktok will help propel our project forward in the right direction by guiding us on best practices and building a great product! Aside from software development, we also look up to you as a mentor for possible career and industry advice in the future.

Lastly, feel free to contact us if our project resonates with you and we would be happy to schedule a call with you to discuss further. We are genuinely excited to make this project a reality and we hope that you will consider our team as we look forward to your mentorship and guidance!

Thank you and wish you a fruitful week ahead!

Hello, Wai Hoong! I'm sure social media has made it simpler for us to communicate with our friends, but are we truly connecting or simply drifting apart? ☹️  We believe that busy schedules or the inconvenience of planning what to eat and do often gets in the way of getting to hang out with our friends. Our app aims to restore human touch to friendships which social media lacks! We hope to foster genuine friendships, encouraging people to spend quality time with their loved ones by making outing planning easier and suggesting fun new activities and food options for everyone to explore around Singapore! We'd appreciate your help in making this program a reality and sharing it with our friends! We'd love to learn more about you and your experiences! Our Project

Hello Boon Wai,

We are Team planlah (5216) consisting of Jotham and Akash - Year 1 Computer Science students who are passionate about software engineering, machine learning and entrepreneurship. Jotham is currently interning as a data engineer at TikTok’s E-Commerce team who is strongly passionate and has prior experience in machine learning research, while Akash is an ardent developer who has experimented with a lot of technology stacks and infrastructure tooling. Our project seeks to combine both of our interests - we hope to build a social media application that leverages machine learning.

Our proposed application revolves around a personalized recommendation system for activities and places targeted towards groups of friends, in light of the recent changes in SIngapore’s COVID restrictions. Users would be able to create “outings”, groups with their jio-ed friends and family, and get recommended places and activities to do based on the group’s combined interests and location.

We aim to expand this into a commercializable social media application for Singaporeans where we would partner with local F&B and recommend their shops, and then give discounts to interested jio-ers. By allowing Singaporeans to post reviews of the places and activities after visiting them on their social media accounts, we ultimately aim for our product to be the premier Singaporean social media application for social outings.

Our reason for choosing you as our mentor is the wealth of knowledge and industry experience that you possess about the mobile industry, something we are hoping to break into through our social media application. To that end, we would be honored to have your mentorship and advice to help shape our long-term goals of building a commercially viable market strategy for the application.

Thank you for taking your time to read this message, and we look forward to being your mentees.

Regards,
Jotham and Akash

Hello Wai Hoong!

We are Venus and Yun Rong from Team Focat, Year 1 Computer Science students who are passionate about software engineering and building reliable and scalable mobile apps. Our project is a productivity mobile app, inspired by a similar one called Forest. As users of Forest ourselves, we have discovered many flaws which we aim to fix with Focat and to further develop features that we wished Forest had. We also aim to publish our app on the app store after Orbital to hopefully provide students with a better productivity mobile app to use.

As it would be our first time working on a mobile app development project at this scale on our own, we hope to be able to leverage upon your vast experience in mobile apps to guide us in our development, especially so because we have no experience in architecture patterns, performance tracking and optimization, targeted refactoring, and unit testing on mobile apps.

Looking forward to learning from you and thank you for your time! :D

Best Regards,
Venus and Yun Rong (Focat)

Given the easing of gambling rules in Singapore, we wish to create an app which can upskill the public in one of the most popular games in the world, Poker. Learning the basic mathematical and statistical theories underlying poker can help to exponentially improve one's game. As such, we wish to serve beginners/intermediate players and introduce them to the technicalities of poker. Personally, we decided to create this project as we are passionate about playing poker and it took us months to understand the game better. With the experience and expertise we have, we wish to educate those freshly entering into the game to prevent them from losing money when playing poker. Our game has special features mentioned in our proposal and video. It would be great to have you mentor us and advise us throughout the journey. We believe your expertise in mobile application would be perfect and extremely beneficial in our roadmap to complete our fun and meaningful project. It would be pretty cool if you play poker too!
