Personalized Message

Good day Mr Zhao! We are team NUSMaps – a proactive and action-driven team with a profound passion towards delivering tangible solutions to the NUS student population. We are also more than willing to be accustomed to industry standards from the start and strike for excellence in our programme implementation and professional communication.

  • Since we are not relying on external libraries and build core data infrastructure (the entire semi-automated map modeling program) from scratch, your experience completing projects from ground zero will serve to be highly translatable to our project.
  • A prominent aspect of our project involves the processing of raster images into 3D models. An additional high priority component is the development of a backend database system which can handle high-frequency static and dynamic retrievals as well as integrate seamlessly with the front end. Hence, we will greatly appreciate an industry expert’s guidance on both domains.
  • Given your rich experience in teaching computer science modules in NUS, we believe that you will be able to effectively deepen our understanding more accurately and comprehensively. This, we regard, is imperative to our learning experience as part of Orbital.

Thank you for reviewing our message with much thought and detail, and we certainly look forward to your favorable reply!

Hi Zhao Cong! We are a pair of self-motivated, driven students who are building a platform which enables open-source collaborative development of notes/study material/cheatsheets (like GitHub or Kaggle for notes).

This idea came about as a result of problems we (and our friends) face, and genuinely believe that this would be a useful tool that will greatly enhance the educational outcomes of students everywhere.

We intend to build on an MEVN stack, and believe your experience in backend development as well as engineering management would greatly benefit our team and your interest in strong software engineering practices and excellence aligns with us. Both of us are keen on perusing a future career with ByteDance/TikTok, and we would be grateful and excited to be under your mentorship!

Do reach out to us via the aforementioned contact methods and thank you for your time!

Dear Mr Zhao,

We are Team State, a team looking to tackle the increasingly detrimental problem of declining mental health, particularly among students. We are creating WellNUS, a web application that tackles this problem by matching students to a group of like-minded peers that will act as a peer support system and improve the accessibility of counselling by utilising volunteer counsellors on top of professional counsellors.

Our team seeks to improve the mental health of youths, especially in the light of the social isolation experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic by creating WellNUS. We hope to learn from your experience in backend application development in order to build a robust and scalable app that can positively impact society at a greater scale. We are motivated and willing to do our utmost best to produce a high-quality app that meets and hopefully exceeds industry standards that we can extend beyond Orbital.

Thank you for taking your time from your busy schedule to become a Mentor for Orbital and we hope to work with and learn from you during this orbital journey.

Yours Sincerely,

Our project seeks to centralise and facilitate the bookings of common facilities in student accommodations in NUS, and also have a social function for “jios”. We discovered that currently, block chats are being used to book these facilities such as the lounge, or to ask people to clear their laundry in the washing machines or dryers for others to use, which we find ineffective. Hence, we propose the all-in-one “hALLinOne” mobile application to address this.
Personal message:
Hello Mr Zhao, we are team hALLinOne! After looking at your introduction, we found ourselves and our project resonating with some of the things you have said. We seek to develop a mobile application that is available on both iOS and Android (hence our choice for React Native) and we highly value your expertise in that area. Secondly, one of our goals is to integrate our mobile application’s bookings and social functions with a Telegram bot, which would require some backend data management that we would like to seek your expertise in. Our goal is to create an application that can actually be used by students staying in residences, which we find while it has been attempted in our hall, it has not really come to fruition. We hence want to create a functional, simple mobile application that would be up to industry standards and as good as it can be, as with what you mentioned you are looking out for.

Hello Zhao Cong,

We are StuBid, also known as ‘Student Bidders’ who aims to innovate a one-stop mobile application (Similar to trading marketplace like Carousell) to allow students from all Singapore Universities to conveniently buy or sell unwanted items online through an anonymous bidding system.

The main theme of StuBid is ‘Anonymity’ which allows students to maintain their privacy and confidentiality, before/during the bidding process. Sellers can auction off their items to potential buyers, while buyers can submit their bid according to their preferred budget. When the final bid is accepted between the Seller and Buyer (Winning Bidder), the ‘Anonymity’ profile by both students will be released to each other (Contact details/information etc) where further transaction can take place.

Moreover, we realise that there is currently no online platform catered specifically for students in NUS or other universities to be able to buy/sell unwanted items. Therefore, StuBid not only serves as a marketplace for students, but also provide much needed convenience, assurance and freedom for students who wish to sell/buy items on an online platform.

We are highly motivated and hardworking individuals who have good interest in mobile development and other related applications. While we lack experience in software development, we are willing to put in our utmost effort to learn along the way. We wish to create a holistic and scalable application that can make a positive impact, as well as meeting the needs of our users. Our main goal is to learn something new, develop something cool, as well as having a fun, meaningful and memorable time together throughout the programme.

We strongly believe that your invaluable experience in mobile app development at ByteDance (TikTok) will help propel our project forward in the right direction by guiding us on best practices and building a great product! Aside from software development, we also look up to you as a mentor for possible career and industry advice in the future.

Lastly, feel free to contact us if our project resonates with you and we would be happy to schedule a call with you to discuss further. We are genuinely excited to make this project a reality and we hope that you will consider our team as we look forward to your mentorship and guidance!

Thank you and wish you a fruitful week ahead!

Hi Zhao Cong! We are a team working on a mobile application which aims to not only simulate colour blindness for users but also allow them to “play” with colours through our unique set of features.
Colour blindness is commonly overlooked as a deficiency and there seems to be little effort on making sure that our colour deficient peers are actually catered to when we create media. Our application aims to let users understand the difficulties of having colour deficiencies and be more compassionate to them.
The experiences that you have listed in your self introduction are the experiences that we greatly need guidance for in our project. We hope that you would consider two earnest students who wish to challenge ourselves in the uncharted territory of mobile app development and make a positive difference with our app.

Dear Zhao Cong,
We are a team that has delved into the world of home-based businesses. Having done so, we have realised
that one major issue faced by these businesses is the lack of exposure online. As such, we have decided
to embark on a project to create UnLockal - a mobile application that serves as an online platform for
home-based businesses to promote themselves and facilitate their transactions. We would love to see the
development of UnLockal to fruition by giving it our best effort and attempting to employ the use of
relevant technologies. We believe that your expertise in mobile application development as well as backend
application development will be quintessential for the success of UnLockal. Unlockal has the potential to do
good for the community as it provides the underprivileged with another avenue of income. We hope that our
vision aligns with yours and would love to have you on board this journey with us. Thank you for your time!

Hi Zhao Cong!

We are Dylen and Jiayong from GetMeOut!. Dylen is a Year 1 Computer Science Student while Jiayong is a Year 1 Business Analytics Student.

Have you ever felt restless in Singapore and can’t wait to travel anywhere else? Yet, planning for travel is always the most difficult and tedious process when travelling. To make matters worse, there are even more processes and steps to take while travelling now due to Covid-19. As the world begins to move past Covid-19, restarting travel, we aim to make travelling easier and accessible to everyone.

We will be creating ‘GetMeOut!’, a cross platform mobile app envisioned to be the one in all travel solution for travellers on the go by providing important trip/travel information through the app as well as storing individual traveller’s documents and details. What makes ‘GetMeOut!’ unique is its Covid-19 features, users will be able to check for restrictions between countries such as quarantine and vaccination requirements. Users will also be able to save vaccination and Covid-19 test records for easier access during travel.

Our application will be heavily dependent on a strong backend as most of the information such as current travel restrictions will be queried from a server. This is similar to Tiktok where the content is stored server side and the app queries for content every time the user opens the app. We have taken a look at your LinkedIn and we noticed that you have immense experience with back-end development which is what we need to manage all the data needed for our app. With your experience as a Software Engineer we really believe that there is plenty of overlap between what you already know and what we need to learn, hence we sincerely hope that we can work on Orbital together and learn from you.

We will be using Flutter for the frontend and postgres/Supabase for the backend. Jiayong has some experience as a Software Engineer Intern while I have mostly been tinkering around with my own Front-End projects. That aside, we are fast learners and we are always looking to learn from others, especially with regards to new tech stacks and industry-related experiences.

Last but no least, thank you for contributing your time to mentor the next batch of computing graduates. We are excited to work with you and we hope to hear from you soon!

Our Project

Hello Zhao Cong,

We are Team planlah (5216) consisting of Jotham and Akash - Year 1 Computer Science students who are passionate about software engineering, machine learning and entrepreneurship. Jotham is currently interning as a data engineer at TikTok’s E-Commerce team who is strongly passionate and has prior experience in machine learning research, while Akash is an ardent developer who has experimented with a lot of technology stacks and infrastructure tooling. Our project seeks to combine both of our interests - we hope to build a social media application that leverages machine learning.

Our proposed application revolves around a personalized recommendation system for activities and places targeted towards groups of friends, in light of the recent changes in SIngapore’s COVID restrictions. Users would be able to create “outings”, groups with their jio-ed friends and family, and get recommended places and activities to do based on the group’s combined interests and location.

We aim to expand this into a commercializable social media application for Singaporeans where we would partner with local F&B and recommend their shops, and then give discounts to interested jio-ers. By allowing Singaporeans to post reviews of the places and activities after visiting them on their social media accounts, we ultimately aim for our product to be the premier Singaporean social media application for social outings.

Our reason for choosing you as our mentor is the wealth of experience and industry insights that you have in software engineering from your time at ByteDance. As aspiring students, we are aiming to do serious software development and data engineering, and feel like you can definitely raise our game. To that end, we would be honored to have your mentorship and perspectives to help shape our long-term aims of reaching a commercially viable market strategy for the application.

Thank you for taking your time to read this message, and we look forward to being your mentees.

Regards,
Jotham and Akash

Ni Shenghan

Good day Mr Zhao Cong!

We are Chun Zhi and Shenghan from Project Minerva, which was created in response to the surprising lack of satisfactory digital platforms for tutors and tutees to connect conveniently.

With roughly S$1.4 billion spent on tuition in 2021 alone, it is shocking to see tuition-matching solutions that have lots of room for improvement.
Current solutions include agency webpages, which require manual matching by agents, as well as Telegram Bots which spin out walls of text that are hard to read.
We believe that this can be done better.

Our vision is to ultimately create a web app that facilitates easy and direct communication between tutors and tutees.
We shall leave the details to our proposal found below, which elaborates on the ways we believe tuition-matching can be done better in Singapore.

We believe that your expertise would act as our pillar of guidance in both front-end and back-end development, as we are lacking in experience but willing to learn and fun individuals to work with. In addition, gaining more insights on business integrity is an important skill which we must focus on besides developing web and mobile apps as we value consumers' opinions.
We feel that it is important to listen to the voice of the users to improve on the quality of our product.

Lastly, as we wish to maximise the outreach of our system, we are considering a mobile app extension in the late stages so that we can cater to users of all platforms. However, this is highly challenging and an experienced mentor skilled in both can definitely make a big difference!

We believe that your skills and experiences will be a great help in fulfilling our goals. We hope to connect with you outside of Orbital as you appear to be a very knowledgeable and fun person to interact with. We also hope to learn more about the career prospects in ByteDance as we are highly interested in joining it sometime in the future!

Thank you for considering our team, and we hope to be able to work with you soon.

Warmest Regards,
Project Minerva

Hello Zhao Cong!

We are Venus and Yun Rong from Team Focat, Year 1 Computer Science students who are passionate about software engineering and building reliable and scalable mobile apps. Our project is a productivity mobile app, inspired by a similar one called Forest, targeting students. As users of Forest ourselves, we have discovered many flaws which we aim to fix with Focat and to further develop features that we wished Forest had. We also aim to publish our app on the app store after Orbital to hopefully provide students with a better productivity mobile app to use.

As it would be our first time working on a software engineer project at this scale on our own, we hope to be able to leverage upon your extensive experience in this industry and pick up some software engineering practices from you to make a good mobile app.

Under your mentorship, we also wish to get some valuable career advice from you, especially for our summer internships next year!

Looking forward to learning from you and thank you for your time!

Naren Sreekanth

Hi Zhao Cong, we are team Dabaogo. We are creating a mobile-centric food delivery service that would create an opportunity for students to not only make money when they go out to have lunch but also to help fellow students / a student get lunch and potentially make new friends. We aim on creating not just a food delivery service but a community where students help one another buy lunch and make friends along the way with a small incentive spurring these acts of kindness. Your experience in mobile app development and backend experience would be instrumental in helping us craft the seamless and most optimized experience for our users and thus, we would be really excited and honored to have you on board as our mentor.
Given the very nature of our application being a food delivery-focused application, we definitely will be incorporating some data engineering elements in the near future but given the team member’s lack of experience in this field, having you onboard would be huge in helping us navigate such a challenging field. In terms of what you are looking for in an orbital project, we believe that we are the perfect fit as we envision our application paving the new way for food delivery services built on top of the kampung spirit of helping close neighbors and so staying up to industry standards and striking for excellence are amongst our top priorities without question.
Moreover, we noticed that you are seeking engineers who are interested in building a career with Bytedance, as it turns out, one of our members, Wen Han, is interning at Bytedance this summer in the Global Payments team. Yet, he decided to find time on top of his busy Bytedance schedule because we believe that this application could benefit individuals in NUS and fellow Singaporeans in the future. We hope that you find our project meaningful and exciting as we are keen on working with you to create an app that can change the way students order food on campus.
