Our team truly resonate with what you are looking for: we are eager and open to learning new tech stacks in the implementation of our application; as students we also genuinely believe that our application will be able to solve this problem that is hidden under the hood and can benefit the learning culture of so many students; and of course, though we try to aim high, we also genuinely believe that this is all a learning process and what is most important is that we make the most of our time doing this project to learn from all the various resources that have been provided for us. We really wish to leverage our application to bring a positive impact to the NUS community. Ultimately, even after orbital this journey does not stop here we sincerely hope that this foray into full-stack development would kickstart our software engineering journey into further projects in the future.

With your experience in full-stack development, we truly believe that your guidance and technical expertise will be invaluable to us as we develop our product. Of course, we would love to have you brew us a cup of coffee too!

Feel free to contact any one of us at the following email addresses(e0726447@u.nus.edu OR e0773533@u.nus.edu) or telegram handle(@linuschan OR @rexlionz) if you have any additional questions for us or just want to find out more about what we do! We are looking forward to your favorable reply!

Dear Mr Wong,

We are Team State, a team looking to tackle the increasingly detrimental problem of declining mental health, particularly among students. We are creating WellNUS, a web application that tackles this problem by matching students to a group of like-minded peers that will act as a peer support system and improve the accessibility of counselling by utilising volunteer counsellors on top of professional counsellors.

Our application connects students to other students to create peer-support groups similar to how TikTok connects content creators and their audience. Hence, we believe that your experience working with TikTok and its user-friendly interface will prove invaluable to the development of WellNUS. As both my teammate and I are budding software engineers, WellNUS will be the first proper software project we embark on and we believe your experience in handling projects from beginning to end will help us better understand the software development process. We intend to utilise Go for the backend of WellNUS and we are interested in learning more tech stacks to make WellNUS a reality.

Thank you for taking your time from your busy schedule to become a Mentor for Orbital and we hope to work with and learn from you during this orbital journey.

Yours Sincerely,
Team State

Dear Mr Wong

Thank you for offering to be a mentor for our journey through Orbital. We are a team of two highly motivated students who aim to create an exciting mobile application known as AR-mazing. This application will be using the latest Augmented Reality technology to provide an immersive experience in visitor tours etc.

We hope to dive deep and explore Augmented Reality technology using Unity AR SDK, a new tech stack that many budding software engineers like ourselves have minimal experience with. We hope to learn as much as possible from your expertise in backend and full-stack development while we develop our application.

Personally, we often felt very lost as visitors while participating in guided tours around the campus/ heritage sites. Hopefully with our application, many other students/visitors can appreciate their landmark better and learn a bit of history along the journey.

Hello Kyler,

We are StuBid, also known as ‘Student Bidders’ who aims to innovate a one-stop mobile application (Similar to trading marketplace like Carousell) to allow students from all Singapore Universities to conveniently buy or sell unwanted items online through an anonymous bidding system.

The main theme of StuBid is ‘Anonymity’ which allows students to maintain their privacy and confidentiality, before/during the bidding process. Sellers can auction off their items to potential buyers, while buyers can submit their bid according to their preferred budget. When the final bid is accepted between the Seller and Buyer (Winning Bidder), the ‘Anonymity’ profile by both students will be released to each other (Contact details/information etc) where further transaction can take place.

Moreover, we realise that there is currently no online platform catered specifically for students in NUS or other universities to be able to buy/sell unwanted items. Therefore, StuBid not only serves as a marketplace for students, but also provide much needed convenience, assurance and freedom for students who wish to sell/buy items on an online platform.

We are highly motivated and hardworking individuals who have good interest in mobile development and other related applications. While we lack experience in software development, we are willing to put in our utmost effort to learn along the way. We wish to create a holistic and scalable application that can make a positive impact, as well as meeting the needs of our users. Our main goal is to learn something new, develop something cool, as well as having a fun, meaningful and memorable time together throughout the programme.

We strongly believe that your invaluable experience in Tiktok will help propel our project forward in the right direction by guiding us on best practices and building a great product! We will be more focused on the process rather than the outcome, which I believe you value in your mentees. Aside from software development, we also look up to you as a mentor for possible career and industry advice in the future.

Lastly, feel free to contact us if our project resonates with you and we would be happy to schedule a call with you to discuss further. We are genuinely excited to make this project a reality and we hope that you will consider our team as we look forward to your mentorship and guidance!

Thank you and wish you a fruitful week ahead!

Our first attempt at building an interactive Figma prototype of PlanNUS (our mobile app name):
https://www.figma.com/proto/SXhEjNftLSG23t3oRbmvV7/PlanNUS?node-id=2594%3A5999&scaling=scale-down&page-id=243%3A1&starting-point-node-id=2594%3A5982

Dear Sir, we are developing a mobile application that helps NUS students to keep their student life organised.

Many freshmen in NUS have struggled to adapt to the transition from high school to university, given the increased level of freedom and high workload, which may be overwhelming to begin with. Moreover, we struggle with Module Registration as we may not be aware of any optimal timetable schedules when planning for registration. The application will help freshmen and even seniors to simplify the process with a click of a button.

The function generates a timetable suitable for the student according to his/her needs. If the student is not satisfied with the current configuration, he/she can regenerate until no feasible timetable is found. It utilises traditional A.I known as the SAT solver to find an optimal feasible timetable configuration, if possible. So far we have not found any mobile applications that utilises SAT solvers which could be a much faster alternative than the conventional timetable planner. If it works it could potentially be a game changer for NUS students, especially freshmen. Moreover, we have a to-do list integrated to our calendar where students can view their most urgent tasks.

Logging a task does not necessarily mean that the student would proactively take action, an alarm feature could remind the student a specified duration before the actual submission deadline. LumiNUS (NUS digital learning platform that supports a variety of e-learning applications) logs our uncompleted task but does not remind us of deadlines via notifications. There is a mobile application version of the platform which is poorly designed (e.g. Constantly crashes, no notifications for deadlines – essentially unusable and we normally use the website version instead).

We will be using Android studio, Java, Firebase and Python(to run the solver). Russell has research experience whereas I tinker with operating systems and thus we are new to Android development and Software Engineering in general but we are fast learners and we feel that Orbital is also a good place for us to step out of our comfort zone to try newer technologies. We would highly value your expertise in backend and fullstack development. We are looking forward to learning a lot from you throughout the mentorship and are hoping to gain insights on how to improve our project. We can see that you like to help others solve everyday problems and we hope that you could walk this journey along with us. Thank you.

Hello, Kyler! I'm sure social media has made it simpler for us to communicate with our friends, but are we truly connecting or simply drifting apart? 🙁 We believe that busy schedules or the inconvenience of planning what to eat and do often gets in the way of getting to hang out with our friends. Our app aims to restore human touch to friendships which social media lacks! We hope to foster genuine friendships, encouraging people to spend quality time with their loved ones by making outing planning easier and suggesting fun new activities and food options for everyone to explore around Singapore! We'd appreciate your help in making this program a reality and sharing it with our friends! We'd love to learn more about you and your coffee-brewing abilities

Hi Kyler!

We are Dylen and Jiayong from GetMeOut!. Dylen is a Year 1 Computer Science Student while Jiayong is a Year 1 Business Analytics Student.

Have you ever felt restless in Singapore and can’t wait to travel anywhere else? Yet, planning for travel is always the most difficult and tedious process when travelling. To make matters worse, there are even more processes and steps to take while travelling now due to Covid-19. As the world begins to move past Covid-19, restarting travel, we aim to make travelling easier and accessible to everyone.

We will be creating ‘GetMeOut!’, a cross platform mobile app envisioned to be the one in all travel solution for travellers on the go by providing important trip/travel information through the app as well as storing individual traveller’s documents and details. What makes ‘GetMeOut!’ unique is its Covid-19 features, users will be able to check for restrictions between countries such as quarantine and vaccination requirements. Users will also be able to save vaccination and Covid-19 test records for easier access during travel.

Our application will be heavily dependent on a strong backend as most of the information such as current travel restrictions will be queried from a server. This is similar to Tiktok where the content is stored server side and the app queries for content every time the user opens the app. We have taken a look at your GitHub and we noticed that you have experience with Flutter which is what we intend to use for our Front-End. With your experience in full-stack development and personal projects we really believe that there is plenty of overlap between what you already know and what we need to learn, hence we sincerely hope that we can work on Orbital together and learn from you.

Apart from Flutter, we will also be using postgres/Supabase for the backend. Jiayong has some experience as a Software Engineer Intern while I have mostly been tinkering around with my own Front-End projects. That aside, we are fast learners and we are always looking to learn from others, especially with regards to new tech stacks and industry-related experiences.

Last but no least, thank you for contributing your time to mentor the next batch of computing graduates. We are excited to work with you and we hope to hear from you soon! (Coffee and Dylen’s stomach don't go well together but maybe your coffee might be different?)

Hi there Kyler,

We are Project FindNUS. We think that the current lost and found (LNF) system in NUS is broken, and we want to fix that.

Why is it broken?

  1. The official lost and found website is unoptimised for mobile (when we lose things, the first thing we do is check using our phones! unless you lost your phone, of course…)
  2. Lost item listings are fragmented across multiple platforms, from the official LNF website to various NUS telegram groups.
  3. The official LNF system is troublesome for people who want to submit lost items to. They have to go down to a physical LNF counter to register the item.

FindNUS aims to make the LNF process as frictionless and seamless as possible, with a mobile-optimised, user-centric search and submit function for LNF items. More details in our proposal ;)

Through this project, we hope to not only learn various industry-standard technologies, but also take the opportunity to develop something useful for the NUS community!

Thanks for taking time out your busy schedule to mentor for Orbital. We hope that our project vision speaks to you to take us on as your mentees. With your deep knowledge and mentorship, we are sure that we can develop an awesome and well-made web application for the NUS community :)

Wesley Bennett Loo Dela Cruz

Hello Kyler,

Like many others in NUS Computer Science, Darren and I have spent most of our uni life grinding and studying. However, it has made us wonder if we are genuinely making the most out of our study time as we can often find ourselves distracted by our smart devices or getting thrown weekly assignments (that never seem to end).

We experimented with different study and project management techniques during the semester to solve our itch, such as keeping up with a Kanban-style to-do list and time-tracking how long each homework assignment takes. In addition, we wanted to track better how we performed daily to analyze whether or not we were studying effectively.

Despite seeing improvement in our study habits, we also realized that our workflow for recording our daily tasks was quite repetitive, and we used multiple applications in this process. This realization led wanting to create a web application that solves our problem and hope that it may potentially help other Gen Z students.

We believe that your experience building full-stack applications and personal projects would make you a great mentor for our team.

Respected sir,
When my teammate and I first read the words ‘those who believe the journey matters more than the goal’, we found it rather surreal because that would be the belief echoed by our team name – Vacilando. This belief is also interwoven into our project, ModPlaNUS, which is meant to be a web app with the power to optimize every NUS student’s academic journey. When brainstorming project proposals, both of us bonded over our shared woes when it came to navigating the complicated module planning exercise – a step with the power to determine our semester experience.
We hope to develop the app such that it can be a one-stop solution for all module planning related activities for students (current and prospective) whereby most processes that we students now do either manually or by jumping from one website to another can be automated into a single smooth experience. In the app, we hope to feature a planner that shall help eliminate the manual process of checking for modules’ prerequisites, corequisites, substitutes, matching modules across different academic programs, etc. This shall help students easily manage their majors, minors, tracks and RC requirements. The app would also include a unique CAP calculator, a module-info page connecting it to important NUS resources like NUSMods and a chatroom that shall facilitate streamlined information-sharing regarding various modules and academic routes.
We felt that your diverse experiences, whether it be as a Software Engineer at TikTok or as a Software Engineer Intern at GovTech Singapore, shall be extremely valuable to us in our journey. Under your mentorship, sir, we would undoubtedly step closer to our goal and acquire new skillsets on the way. More than anything, we strongly resonate with the sentiment echoed in both our team’s name and your mentor-introduction slide. It is this sentiment that we wish to tap into while developing our app that shall smoothen the journey into and in university life. We would be truly excited and very much honored if you choose us to be your mentees, sir.
Thanking You,
Team Vacilando

The 100 Club - A Validated Concept with 20+ Interested Student Founders

Hi Kyler, thank you for volunteering to be part of Orbital. We believe your skillsets + prior experiences as a Software Engineer, would make a great fit for our team, and we would love the opportunity to work together + learn from you. We’ve got a proven, validated concept, and a motivated team that will ensure strong initiative + planning frameworks to reduce any operational concerns on your end.

Entrepreneurship is difficult - it’s lonely, it’s tough to hold yourself accountable, and it’s not easy to explore uncharted territories. That is why our team is currently building The 100 Club, which is a mastermind community, that matches entrepreneurial individuals into groups of 4, in order for them to support each other in staying accountable, sharing advice, and networking to grow their business. We plan on supporting this community by building an exclusive membership platform (web application).

It is an idea that we are going to expand/commercialise in the future and we have already found traction with over 20+ student founders keen on joining us. Feel free to check out our material below! We hope you consider our proposal favourably and look forward to hearing from you. Cheers.

Hi Mr Wong!
We are Team Ka.Y.E., a team looking to create a customisable personal assistant in the form of a webapp. The ideas behind the features of our project stem from our personal experiences of inconveniences on communication platforms, platforms that we frequently use. The app aims to be a supplement to these platforms that provides utility to the users. We understand that you have experience in full-stack development, something that would be very helpful to us as we are inexperienced in that field. We do feel like this project is a good opportunity to dip our feet into full-stack development. Our motivations are rooted personally, and while our proposal has outlined quite a few features we want, we would definitely like to include more if possible. Our ideas may not be the first of its kind, nor may they be complicated, but our team dreams of taking these ideas and including our own extensions to them. We believe the learning experience in attempting to fulfil our personal visions through an app will be invaluable in the future.
Also, good coffee is something we’ve been interested in too… School has not been easy so perhaps we could learn a thing or two from you about coffee as well?
Thank you!

Dear Mr Wong,
We are PokerBros and we bring a unique and engaging problem forward. Given the easing of gambling rules in Singapore, we wish to create an app which can upskill the public in one of the most popular games in the world, Poker. Learning the basic mathematical and statistical theories underlying poker can help to exponentially improve one's game. As such, we wish to serve beginners/intermediate players and introduce them to the technicalities of poker. Personally, we decided to create this project as we are passionate about playing poker and it took us months to understand the game better. With the experience and expertise we have, we wish to educate those freshly entering into the game to prevent them from losing money when playing poker. Our game has special features mentioned in our proposal and video.
It would be great to have you mentor us and advise us throughout the journey. We believe your expertise in full stack and guidance will prove extremely beneficial in our roadmap to complete our project fun and meaningful project.

Regards,
Devanshu Bisht and Ang Yuze
