Personalized message:
Dear Sir, our team is developing a web application that aims to organise a student’s task list that is accessible on all devices. Our application has 2 unique features. Firstly, it has a time-management and gamification system that encourages students to stay on track with their tasks. Secondly, it has the ability to create self-imposed deadline by accessing the student’s educational institution. We highly value your expertise in the entire stack and your experience in the tech industry. We are looking forward to learn from your experience throughout the mentorship and hope to gain insights on how to improve our project. Thank you.

This belief is also interwoven into our project, ModPlaNUS, that is meant to be a web app with the power to optimize every NUS student’s academic journey. While brainstorming project proposals, both of us bonded over our shared woes when it came to navigating the complicated module planning exercise – a step with the power to determine our semester experience. We hope to develop the app such that it can be a one-stop solution for all module planning related activities for students (current and prospective) such that most processes that we students now do either manually or by jumping from one website to another can be automated into a single smooth experience. In the app, we hope to feature a planner that shall help eliminate the manual process of checking for modules’ prerequisites, corequisites, substitutes, etc. This shall help students easily manage their majors, minors, tracks and RC requirements. The app would also include a unique CAP calculator, a module info page connecting it to important NUS resources like NUSMods and a chatroom that shall facilitate streamlined information sharing regarding various modules and academic routes. Your experience at Paypal as a Software Engineer and skills in backend and frontend development, especially with reference to Java, is particularly valuable and suitable for our project. Moreover, as year 1 CS students who are deeply passionate about CS and are eager to taste the ‘real-world’ corporate environment of software engineering and development, seeking guidance from someone like you who has experienced the same from the very start, whether it be through Apple internships or projects, would help us move in the right direction in our Orbital and (more importantly) CS journey. Under your mentorship, we are sure to move closer towards our goal and learn a lot along the way. We would be truly excited and very much honoured if you choose us to be your mentees, sir. Looking forward to a positive response Thank you Team Vacilando

A glimpse into our project

A message for you

Dear Gabriel, before we make our introduction, we would like to extend our warmest welcome to you for joining onboard the Mentoring Team for Orbital 2022. We hope that you have a great time here.

In today's age and society, while video games has replaced much of physical board and card games, we hope to develop a platform to enable tabletop game players and enthusiasts to freely rent and buy/sell their physical tabletop games. Our platform would also feature a community section that allows users to explore and connect with tabletop players and interest groups around them physically, and feature regular events for users to participate.

The following tech stack will be used for this project:

1) Mobile Development (By Wen Jun)
Flutter

2) Web Development (By Marcus)
React/Redux
TypeScript
React Testing Library/Jest

3) Backend Development (By Wen Jun)
ExpressJS (Server) / Cloud Function or AWS (Serverless)
Auth: Firebase
Database: Firebase / MongoDB
File Storage: Firebase Cloud Storage / AWS S3

We believe we can leverage on your expertise in full-stack Web development to create a comprehensive product.

We have prior experience in both front- and back-end web development through our Hall's Developers CCA, where we create a web app for our hall to facilitate residents' lives. We believe we possess the foundational technical skills for our project, and we would like to leverage on your expertise to learn more on the best practices for front- and back-end web application development as practised in the industry.

Therefore, by leveraging on your expertise and mentorship, we believe that we can maximise our technical capabilities and create the most value out of our project.

MATCHED WITH ANDREW GREGOVIC

The 100 Club - A Validated Concept with 20+ Interested Student Founders Hi Gabriel, thank you for volunteering to be part of Orbital. We believe your skillsets + prior experiences as a Software Engineer, would make a great fit for our team, and we would love the opportunity to work together + learn from you. We’ve got a proven, validated concept, and a motivated team that will ensure strong initiative + planning frameworks to reduce any operational concerns on your end. Entrepreneurship is difficult - it’s lonely, it’s tough to hold yourself accountable, and it’s not easy to explore uncharted territories. That is why our team is currently building The 100 Club, which is a mastermind membership platform + community, that matches entrepreneurial individuals into groups of 4, in order for them to support each other in staying accountable, sharing advice, and networking to grow their business. Membership platform features include: • Membership system • Directory of Customisable User Profiles with Search Functionality • Swag Store with Credits • Mentorship access for chats • Content Library It is an idea that we are going to expand/commercialise in the future and we have already found traction with over 20+ student founders keen on joining us. Feel free to check out our material below! We hope you consider our proposal favourably and look forward to hearing from you. Cheers. Dabaogo

Hi Gabriel, we are team Dabaogo. We are creating a mobile-centric food delivery service that would create an opportunity for students to not only make money when they go out to have lunch but also to help fellow students get lunch and potentially make new friends. We aim to create not just a food delivery service but a community where students help one another buy lunch and make friends along the way with a small monetary incentive spurring these acts of kindness. Your experience in software development would be instrumental in helping us craft a seamless and most optimized experience for our users and thus, we would be excited and honoured to have you on board as our mentor. We hope that you find our project meaningful and exciting as we are keen on working with you to create an app that can change the way students order food on campus.

Zhou Yujie

Hi Mr Li, we are team hALLinOne! Seeing what you have mentioned in your introduction, we find that it resonates with what we hope to achieve out of Orbital! We are looking to learn as much as we can from Orbital, mainly, to obtain knowledge of full-stack programming, which we believe your experience in that area would prove valuable, in addition to your repertoire of languages that we hope to learn about as well. Although we are working on a mobile application whereas you are currently in web application development, we do believe that your insights on the entire process would still be of significant value to us. Moreover, we would love to hear about your early career experience, so that we are able to kickstart our journey into the working world!

Our project seeks to centralise and facilitate the bookings of common facilities in student accommodations in NUS, and also have a social function for “jios”. We discovered that currently, block chats are being used to book facilities such as the lounge, or ask people to clear their laundry in the washing machines or dryers for others to use, which we find ineffective. Hence, we propose the all-in-one “hALLinOne” mobile application to address this.
