Sng Wei Zhen Shanice

Hi Andrew!

We are Shanice and Min Xian from Team NUSPlanner.

Our team details are as follows:
Team name: NUSPlanner
Student name: Sng Wei Zhen Shanice & Ong Min Xian
Contact Details (Email): e0774411@u.nus.edu & e0540516@u.nus.edu
Contact Details (Telegram): @sngshanice & @johnongminxian

Our team is proposing a web application that helps students to land their dream job by providing insights on how they allocate their time in three important aspects - work, academics and extracurriculars.

As employers increasingly value technical skills over traditional qualifications, countless undergraduates are struggling to differentiate themselves from the growing pool of skilled competitors in Singapore. With our web application, we are confident that we can make a difference to this issue by reinforcing the need for undergraduates to develop their portfolio holistically from the very beginning, which will be vital to helping them land their dream job.

The biggest selling point of our project would definitely be the use of descriptive tools like bar charts which enable users to derive meaningful insights on their daily activities through a single glance. We will also be providing a dashboard view which allows students to track their productivity, and a progress report which helps students accurately put together a detailed resume based on the activities that they have logged into the planner.

We are aware that you have extensive knowledge about databases and building high-quality, efficient applications that last. Your skills will be an amazing complement to our project, thus we would like to request for you to be our mentor.

We will be most delighted to have you as our mentor because of the vast repertoire of skills that you have gained from your rich working experiences and your commitment towards the highest standards in all projects that you undertake. Similarly, we are a driven team that pays attention to details and strives to deliver the best in all that we do. We are certain that we will be able to learn much from you to create a quality product, and also hope to forge lasting connections with you during and after this mentorship.

More details about our project can be viewed at the following links. On top of the required submissions, we have also prepared a short 1 minute video to demonstrate our prototype.

Dear Mr Gregovic,

We are Team State, a team looking to tackle the increasingly detrimental problem of declining mental health, particularly among students. We are creating WellNUS, a web application that tackles this problem by matching students to a group of like-minded peers that will act as a peer support system and improve the accessibility of counselling by utilising volunteer counsellors on top of professional counsellors.

With a vision to bring a positive impact to society at a large scale, we hope to learn from your expertise in product development and building scalable, robust and high-performance applications. In addition, your interest in machine learning aligns with our goal of building an intelligent matching system to improve the effectiveness of our app. We are motivated and willing to do our utmost best to produce a high-quality app that meets and hopefully exceeds industry standards that we can extend beyond Orbital.

Thank you for taking your time from your busy schedule to become a Mentor for Orbital and we hope to work with and learn from you during this orbital journey.

Our Project

Hello Andrew,

We are Team planlah (5216) consisting of Jotham and Akash - Year 1 Computer Science students who are passionate about software engineering, machine learning and entrepreneurship. Jotham is currently interning as a data engineer at TikTok’s E-Commerce team who is strongly passionate and has prior experience in machine learning research, while Akash is an ardent developer who has experimented with a lot of technology stacks and infrastructure tooling. Our project seeks to combine both of our interests - we hope to build a social media application that leverages machine learning.

Our proposed application revolves around a personalized recommendation system for activities and places targeted towards groups of friends, in light of the recent changes in SIngapore’s COVID restrictions. Users would be able to create “outings”, groups with their jio-ed friends and family, and get recommended places and activities to do based on the group’s combined interests and location.

We aim to expand this into a commercializable social media application for Singaporeans where we would partner with local F&B and recommend their shops, and then give discounts to interested jio-ers. By allowing Singaporeans to post reviews of the places and activities after visiting them on their social media accounts, we ultimately aim for our product to be the premier Singaporean social media application for social outings.

Our reason for choosing you as our mentor is the wealth of experience and industry insights that you have in software engineering from your time at PayPal. With your experience in scalable systems, we believe that your guidance will be immensely beneficial to our project. To that end, we would be honored to have your mentorship and perspectives to help shape our long-term aims of reaching a commercially viable market strategy for the application.

Thank you for taking your time to read this message, and we look forward to being your mentees.

Regards,
Jotham and Akash

Good day Mr Gregovic, We are CoinValet (Team 5435) and we would like to take this opportunity to introduce our project, as well as seek your assistance on our endeavour. We noticed that you love dabbling in Machine Learning and we think that you would be a great fit for our team as we aim to utilise Machine Learning to build our trading algorithm. Incorporating ML into our project is a definite challenge that we foresee, and we are very keen on embarking on this journey with you. We will definitely benefit from your knowledge and experience in this area. We believe that your expertise in building high performing applications will prove invaluable when we embark on organising our data efficiently such that our application runs smoothly. We foresee running into data overload and lagging problems considering the amount of data we need to continuously extract from the trading platform’s API. We will also deal with large amounts of data when we conduct backtesting using historical prices of various cryptocurrencies to ensure that our trading algorithm performs optimally. Our aim is to create a fully functional app and trading algorithm that we can be proud of as well as make trades that are mostly successful so as to grow our portfolio. We are very excited about this project and we are sure that you will be excited about it too. We look forward to having you on board this journey with us. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us and we will gladly respond :)

Hi Andrew!
We are Team JavaBean. What we are doing for this Summer is to create a pixel perfect, Open-World RPG Style Game that utilises NoSQL Cloud database - Firebase for a virtual trading platform. Throughout last semester, we have been incessantly brainstorming our lore and what the game would be like, I hope our proposal would pique your interest in mentoring our team.

We are highly driven by our ambition to bring what we could've only dreamed of a few months ago into reality. We wanted to share with the world our story in a beautiful package in the form of a game:

Even though we only have 2.5 months, we would like to work on an area that is the trending the most in the tech community - blockchain, so that we can better understand how these things work. This is why we are challenging ourselves by ambitiously infusing NFT with all the in-game assets! Despite our previous experiences in creating other projects, we are still 2 Y1 CS students, thus we lacked the direction in adhering to and implementing good software engineering skills and principles, especially in the testing department. We are also not well-versed in database management. This is why we look forward to your guidance in helping our team to reach our potential and to make this game a success!

Thank you!
Team JavaBean.

Hi Mr Gregovic!
We are Team Ka.Y.E., a team looking to create a customisable personal assistant in the form of a webapp. The ideas behind the features of our project stem from our personal experiences of inconveniences on communication platforms, platforms that we frequently use. The app aims to be a supplement to these platforms that provides utility to the users. Our motivations are rooted personally, and while our proposal has outlined quite a few features we want, we would definitely like to include more if possible.
Thank you!

Loh Yi Kuang

Hi Andrew!

Nice to meet you. We are Jing En and Yi Kuang, and we would love to have the honour of you mentoring us for our project!

Our project - Pilot is an extension of conventional academic search engines on the open web. Combining features such as instant click downloads, field-related analytics and the ability to curate personal archives, we aim to liberate and revolutionise the way we browse academic papers. Project Pilot combines the functionalities of JSTOR's constellate API, Google Scholar and Library Genesis, to allow users to browse, save and download research papers for free on demand, on top of other additional features.

With one of our main problem statements revolving around dealing with the large database of papers stored by Library Genesis, we believe that your experience in building high performance applications and database backends will help us in the greatest possible way.

Features

  1. Our intended recommendation algorithm will allow users to spend less time searching while gaining access to the most relevant & curated academic papers.
  2. Every student knows how annoying it is to lose a paper that you saw somewhere, somehow, a long time ago. Pilot’s personal database will allow users to store papers with the click of a button, storing it into their own database for later reference. No more frustration of losing your papers!
  3. Updated analytics on the academic fields that the query is related to. In this manner, users will be able to gain an understanding of where their search query is applied in real-world contexts.
  4. On-demand instant download through fuzzy search with Libgen’s database, without the need to visit third party websites.
